Hi,

I've just used my K7 with a cheap tripod I had. Yes it's flimsy and not good enough. On the top release clip where you screw into the bottom of the SLR there's another little metal protuding thingy which I covered up with sellotape to avoid scratching?? I don't see it's purpose.

Have ordered a Manfrotto Tripod.

I believe that's a pin that can be used on some cameras to align the plate with.
So the pin fits inside a whole so that it's always aligned, I believe that's what it is for.

Right, so far I've found it a nuisance as it gets in the way and can scratch your camera if you're not careful. Thanks!!

You usually find the hole that it goes into on video cameras

I believe every OR plate has it so when you get your Manfrotto you'll have the same problem.
I've never brothered with mine it did scratch the sticker a bit but not much so I wouldn't worry all to much.

Yes I too believe these pins are the register in the base of video cameras.

If you study the construction of these pins in the head, you can usually remove them. I have done this to all my tripods.

Yes,
I bought a spare Manfrotto Quick Release Bracket and that had a Pin too but it was made from a hard plastic and just pushed it out from underneath.
