What primes would we like to see?

Posted 10/09/2010 - 18:42 Link
As the topic of the new 35mm F2.4 rages, I thought what prime lenses would we like to see? Maybe hypothetical, maybe reality. Obviously at the moment Pentax have no intention to produce a FF camera, so lenses must suit APS-C.
I will start.

As Pentax were the only one to bring out a "true" normal prime (the 43mm), an APS-C version will be needed. So, as the focal length is considered "normal" in the world of focal lengths, then a 28mm F1.4 should be considered. This will give an EFOV of 42mm on any body apart from the K20D and K-7, and 43.4mm on the aformentioned K20D and K-7 (did you know they had a crop ratio of 1.55 rather than the normal 1.5 of other bodies? me neither until I looked into it.....). I suppose we would like sealing and motor drive, so. DA*28mm F1.4 it is.
A limited (with metal body could be brought out too, say, the DFA 28mm F1.8 Limited, with no sealing and SDM).

Next a couple of 90mm lenses (EFOV 135-139) mainstream at F2.8 and DA* at F2.

How about a super fast 70mm (EFOV 105mm) F1.4 DA* lens? Won't be cheap, but boy a superb portrait lens...

What about a superwide. Yes they have the 15mm Limited. but wider. How about a 10mm F2.8 or F3.5? Weather sealed, but no need for SDM though.

Finally, some tele lenses. some lenses greater than the 300mm F4

How about a 400mm F4, 500mm F5, and properly put the 600mm F4 available rather than "special order", all with sealing and SDM......
Also, I would like to see a 180mm F4 Macro too, as at times I use my very old Tamron 90mm F2.5 with 2x but it is slow and clunky.

So, a nice start, what would you want?

two lenses for me...
a leaf shutter 55 sdm. for portraits.
and take the glass from a wide prime 645 lens and mate it to a ball socket lens mount for a tilt/swivel/shift effect (think this:Comment Image
on steroids plus shift ability, just for fun)
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

A properly 'fast' 35mm; a DA 35/1.8 or 35/1.4.

A DA 10/2.8.

Hello

I would love to see something from Pentax in the range of 400/500 or even 600mm, however I fear that should Pentax release such an item they may be held solely responsible for making a major dent in both my savings account and my relationship with my good lady.

So far I have resisted the da* 300mm kidding myself that one day there will be some newer/ longer pentax glass and that somehow I can manage to persuade my good lady that it was worth every penny whilst she has to make do with a book for Christmas

MY 6 year old may also have som einput on this

Heres hoping

I'd like a DA10 limited, and a DA8 fisheye limited.

(And a lottery win to pay for them..)

Cheers,

I think a range of SDM teleconvertors at 1.4x (pro), 1.7x (enthusiast), and 2x (cheap) would be the most cost-effective things Pentax could bring out.

A 400mm/2.8 would be good as well...just to shut up the moaning bird/plane photographers...
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

I'm with DM on this, a135 that's affordable(£150?) and maybe a 50 and 28 to go with it.

Come on Pentax, you have the ability to produce a 'budget' range and boost sales without too much outlay.

Use the old groupings and plastic mounts to give us a selection we ALL can afford.
Cheers, HG

10mm(or 12mm)f4 at a price that will undercut the sigma 10-20mm. Surely such a lens would be easier to make and better?

Without unreasonable expectations of speed where Pentax shows no sign of delivering, the obvious holes are:

DA 24mm f/2 Limited
DA 28mm f/2 Limited
DA 135mm f/1.4 Limited

Plus a tilt/shift adapter that permits use of Pentax 645 lenses on KA mount.

In 135 terms, these would be 36mm, 42mm and 202.5mm, none of which seem overly exciting to me (35mm, 43mm, 200mm)

Would you buy lenses of those particular lengths? Or, to put it another way, when (if) you used film, did you buy those lenses?
Best regards, John

Yes John, But 36 to 42 would be too close for me. I only had two zooms back then, a 35-80 Series 1 Vivitar ans a 70-210 Series 1 Vivitar.

At that time, zooms were a compromise.

Let me get this straight... you wouldn't be excited by a 200mm equivalent f1.4 ?

35mm is a classic focal length & many a street photographers mainstay.

42mm seems an odd length, but then again Pentax released a 43mm as a "standard" lens & although not a huge seller, it's probably more down to price when you can get (or could get at least) a 50mm for a fair bit less cash.

I think the main reason for the 43mm not being a huge seller was that it has never been a standard kit lens. Pentax switched to providing a zoom as the standard lens with the attitude that people who want even better quality will be prepared to pay big money, which is how the auto focus primes ended up at £300+ and in some cases over a £1k. That's why the F 35-70mm is plentiful and relatively cheap while the F 50mm hardly ever appears (and is usually £150 or more when it does).

Weirdly I find that I prefer to carry the old three primes kit around than some older zooms. With the exception of the M 75-150mm the older zooms are a bit heavy to carry all the time, while the M 135mm is pretty much pocket sized.
