Hi, I am "desperately" in need of a prime Macro lens ... oh, let me rephrase that, an affordable prime Macro Lens .
If anyone has one spare (preferably a 100mm), at a nice price, please please please, give me a shout.

Hope that sounded desperate enough to rattle someones cage.

Your help much appreciated

If you can get one for that price I'd snap it up! Current SRS price for the older current 100 (DFA) is 520.

There's a ton of them on Ebay at the c.295 mark, and has been for weeks now... its stock-clearance of the old models now they have released the WR version.

As for the OP's question, there don't seem to be many Macros at the 150 mark, sadly demand seems to keep the prices up
Still shooting in the dark (literally and metaphorically)...

Sorry, I should have said snap it up if I were you (I already have one - if not here in SL). That really is a good price. At that price I'm smelling something potentially fishy - and I'm not talking DA10-17! I can only find one on ebay now @ 305 + 18 p+p from Hong Kong.

BTW re. your original post, Fred, I recently got an A50 f2.8 macro for about 100. Not your favoured length, but it is a fabulous lens in more or less every respect - image quality, build, size... it even comes with a dinky Pentax case.

In that price range you should be able to find a Sigma 50mm EX DG 2.8, or a Cosina/Pentax AF 100mm f3.5. Maybe an older AF version of the Tamron 90mm 2.8, or the MF adaptall one (1:1)
Pentax M 100mm F4 should be sub-100, I think, but that might be too much of a compromise for you (F4, 1:2 ratio, manual exposure)

Remember that there is (almost) no such thing as a bad macro lens, so extend your search to Ricoh, Cosina, Vivitar Series 1, etc.

In fact, since you will often want to set your own aperture and focus manually, there is no good reason to avoid M42 lenses.

I would look for a good old manual focus lens. Auto focus not terribly useful for macro anyway. Tamron 90s are pretty easy to come by in the price range you are looking at (the earliest Adaptall 2 ones are 1:2 instead of 1:1 but perform very well with the matched SP teleconverter). Vivitar made two very highly regarded macros around this focal length. I will reserve judgement on the SMCM 100/4 until I've given the one I just got from Hefty a whirl!
