Value of photos

I have for the first time entered an open photography exhibition by a local art society; £10-15 per photo to enter, all to be mounted and framed for hanging. As my photos aren’t standard size I made my own mount but the framing cost £44 each so, if you add up the printing, framing and entry fee that comes to about £60. Ok, you can get standard frames for much less which would bring the cost down to say half that, so I was amazed to see sale prices on some as low as £24 and almost all under £50. In other words just about covering the material cost and nothing for the creative effort nor the time spent processing, let alone the investment in equipment used. The photos were rated good enough to be exhibited so why would the photographers put such an insignificant value on their work?

I had a similar problem after being asked for a print. My frames were £27 with a double mount and the prints were 16x12 giclee costing £14. If I had to pay a fee of £15 on top then a total cost of £56 would leave me out of pocket also. I didn't charge a lot for the print in the end but be assured when I am dead I am sure they will be sitting on a fortune

I don't know what others charge but it does seem a hard way of making a living unless there is some secret I am not aware of.

I recently entered a competition where the rules state that they do not return the prints. I nagged them until they agreed to return mine! I've never sold a print for profit, I just cover the costs. I'm always amazed anyone other than me wants one of my images on the wall!

These rules are really weird.
