Photography is only a competition when you get caught up in camera club activities - I am not sure whether that is good or bad, but you learn fast and competitions can be both enjoyable when the judge llikes your images and not so enjoyable when he/she does not. As for Skodas - they are actually very good cars with an image problem not unlike Pentax. If I really thought that Canon/ Nikon were superior to Pentax, I would change, but I do not. Pentax is second to none given a satisfactory capture especially with an improved AF as with the KIIs.

I don't think Canon or Nikon are superior to Pentax either and my Skoda to Formula 1 analogy wasn't the best I know
But the point was, that Pentax don't have a D800 Equivalent, and you were indicating that equipment makes a difference to your ability to compete. Personally I don't think it should matter as it's just as likely someone can take an award winning photo on a k-5 as they can on a D800.

Looks a different beast to me. 645D is medium format, while the D800 is a FF DSLR.
645D seems specialist to studio type work with a limited ISO range while the D800, is well a high end FF DSLR for a wider range of uses with a higher ISO.

Smeggy, in general terms I agree with you, a great photographer will take an award winning photo with almost anything.
But in real life it depends on your application, I believe. So if you are in sports photography or in landscape photography you might be interested in different cameras.

I certainly agree with Sports, I think the weakness in the Pentax line-up now is more to do with specialist lenses than it is to do with capable bodies (obviously full frame being the exception to this), which is where it can't compete with the likes of Canon.
I don't agree on the landscapes comment though, infact I think entirely the opposite..for me Pentax bodies and their lens line-up seem more designed with the landscape photographer in mind...excellent dynamic range of the K5, weather proofing, solid build, plenty of wide angle lenses.
I'm reluctant to move from Pentax as I find the functionality of their bodies is really well thought out too..running photography workshops means I often need to get to grips with the Nikon & Canon models and I haven't come across one as yet that's as intuitive or functional as the K5.

To Smeggy,
Yes I agree entirely with your comment. A brilliant photographer with a box brownie would probably put us all to shame. My problem is with autofocus of moving images, an area where Pentax lags a bit behind other makes. I recently read the review of the K5IIs on DXO labs and this certainly makes this point, although Pentax is ahead of most of the field in other respects. I have no worries at all about landscape shots at which Pentax excells. I just wish for a greater number of keepers where the subject is moving and if the K5IIs will give me this then I might get some wild life shots to compete with others at the Camera Club.
So far a number of professional users have reported an overall improvement in AF and several in iQ generally. These reports have put aside any doubt that the K5IIs is worth having and I just have to resolve now whether I can afford one !!

Treat yourself to a K5lls, you only live once. Quality does cost, but in this area Pentax really does provide you with a lot in relation to what the other camera brands can offer and more often than not they charge a higher price too.
I think people at your camera club will show more interest in the K5lls when they see you with one and what it offers.

I think that with my recent aquisitions of better lenses, AF speed certainly has become something of a minor issue. I'm an indifferent amateur in skills so would really only notice that. Otherwise the K5 is great for me. With my daughter I've really noticed slow AF with the DA* 50-135, gets there but takes a while to lock on, esp in the poor light I've been working with. I'm considering the K5ii but am finding peoples opinions very interesting about the relatives merits of upgrading or not.

You are convincing me as, as you say, you only live once!
As for the camera club - we are not at all equipment orientated. I could turn up on an outing with a Leica or a Hasselbad and probably no-one would notice! This is a good thing because it means that no -one looks down on other members' cameras, however humble they may be. There are only two Pentaxians in the club - me and another, most of them have never even heard of Pentax!!

I am more concerned with focus accuracy than with focus speed. On the other forum one of our countymen insists that the problem lies with the lenses rather than the camera body. Granted the big DA* zooms are great, but the attraction of Pentax for me lies with the wonderfully small DA Ltds of which I have four ( 15,21, 35 and 70mm). I love their sharpness and the way they complement the camera without adding unduly to the overall weight.

I play a lot with old film cameras and I would love a proper viewfiner to focus more efficiently on digital with old primes. I got the K5 for high ISO and weather sealing (very important to me and why I got my first DSLR, the K200d). I've just started having the feeling that quite a few shots haven't been spot on recently in focus. I'm afraid I've come to the feeling that a DSLR is big and heavy and thus a little extra is not so much of a problem for me!! I'm not sure about AF probelms being in the lenses as unless there is a major problem with assembly it's the camera that has the sensors and the basic motor...

If you can afford it then get one. - I'd have a couple of K-5II bodies to replace my two K-5s in a heartbeat if I could comfortably withstand the cash hit. The improved AF does sound tempting.
But being no Bill gates, I gotta think about the future and thus I'm waiting to see what the K-3 brings us in the near future.

The IIs also has better IQ; leaving all focus issues aside, when comparing like for like on images that are in focus, the IIs images are sharper and cleaner; more impact as was mentioned above.
