I have downloaded a trial copy of Topaz Denoise.
I was surprised when a 1500 x 1500px image took nearly 10 minutes to process and another 10 to save the result (which was good). I tried a full frame - and wished I hadn't. 2 hours later it was still processing it.
Is it normally so glacially slow or am I doing something wrong.?
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

I've got a trial that I've not used yet so can't really give a definitive, but how's the spec of your machine? It sounds as though the software is working, maybe an increase in memory or processing power will help?

You could also double check the image size is 1500px square at 72ppi and hasn't been inadvertently changed to pixels per cm, or the 1500px to 1500inches......it can happen and could potentially slow things down dramatically.

Does your computer exceed the minimum specification requirements for Topaz products? Modern graphics apps nowadays need a high-end GPU and plenty of RAM. When you have the right machine, Topaz Denoise AI is arguably the best product available of its type.
