I still don't know why you are selling a load of good lenses instead of replacing/repairing your faulty DS.

Hi George, because I like the DS body and I don't like the new ones.
It's a bit chicken and egg, I might buy a new body and that might not be any good either or I might find some work and some don't like the DS.
Given that the K20 has individual settings for each lens they admit there is a lens to lens problem.
I don't like the K20 so what's my alternative ?
I used the DS last week for some important pictures and they were all back focused using the FA24-90 so I thought not much point keeping the lenses that don't work and I didn't fancy paying £700 for a body I don't like much.

I'd have tried sending it to Pentax with a couple of lenses, and asking them to sort it out. Or buying a second-hand one on Ebay. Just seems an awful shame to sell so many nice lenses, but I do sympathise with your dilemma.

Hi George, I don't think there's an actual fault with the camera. The autofocus is inconsistent even with a lens that works. You often have to press the button a few times until it actually gets it right. It's always been like that from day one. I don't expect that there's anything Pentax could or would do for it. It does seem a a bit better with Lithium batteries though but I didn't have any last week for my sons prom when I was using the FA24-90.
The FA35 it just hates more than any other lens so I think it would need the capability that the K10 and K20 have to programme different lenses in.
I had been considering getting a K10 but it was the fact that you couldn't adjust for individual lenses that put me off and the possible inferior noise performance. I didn't like the increase in size, weight and the squarer shape of the grips and body felt uncomfortable. I can't use my macro flash on it either.

At least trying your lenses on a different DS, would identify if it is a DS problem or just your example. Is there no one local to you with a DS to compare against?

I am interested to know, which lens do work, maybe a list of those that do and don't might help others with a DS to comment.
I understand your reluctance to move onto a K10 or 20, but the DS won't last forever, and many of the lens that you mention are no longer made. I would have thought that it will be much more expensive in the long term to replace them than getting a replacement for your DS, if indeed it does need replacing.

Hi Steve, Dan came round a month or two ago and tried a few of the lenses on his K10 and they seemed to work ok. Without actually trying a body for a few days however it's hard to say. Of course I've left it a bit late for a K10 now unless I buy one in Argos for £450 but then I don't expect that they would take it back if it didn't focus with every lens.
The ones that work and don't
Didn't do well are the
FA24-90
FA77mm
FA35 F2
Ok if you watch that it's actually focused
FA50 Macro
FA135
FA28
Mostly ok
FA50
FA100
Always ok

I read the earlier thread, so I was aware that the troublesome lenses appear to work fine on the K10. Of those on your list I have FA35, FA50, and the 18-55 kit lens and as expected they work fine on my K10D. I also have a FA28-70, which you have listed for sale and this also works fine ,in fact I have yet to fit a lens that did not work.
It would be interesting to hear of other DS experiences with these lenses. Any DS users out there that can help John solve this problem
Just came across this item on ebay only 20 minutes left, and it would be expensive once import have been paid http://tinyurl.com/666nfa

Hi thanks for the heads up on the DS, I think they maybe a bit optomistic on the price though i think if I thought i could get that sort of money for it I'd sell it myself ! I forgot about the 28-70, yes the DS hated that too.

Well I have a Ds but I don't have any of the same lenses as John so I can't help. I have never had any focussing problems with my Ds though.
Maybe Remco (Golfdiesel) has some of the same lenses and can comment.
I understand your reluctance to replace the Ds but honestly if I had that many lenses giving me problems with it I would replace it. I intend to replace mine one of these days, even though the K20D is bigger and heavier etc etc, It won't last forever, whereas the glass will. Chelmsford is a bit far to test the lenses on my Ds

As so many lenses are causing problems it must be the camera. I used a DS and it was fine with all lenses.
I would suggest the K200D as a replacement - a very similar design and 10.2MP as well.

Hi John, after my experiences I'd only buy a camera where you can setup the lenses individually so that means the K20D or Nikon D300.
They both cost too much at the moment and the Nikon doesn't take Pentax lenses (unless you know better )and weighs about twice what I want to lug about.
I might buy a K20D when it hits the £400 mark.

John, I think you have a problem with your camera, not the lenses. If you are going to stick with Pentax, why sell them.? Similarly, if you plan to switch to Nikon, don't be afraid to say.
If you could just admit to yourself that you have a duff camera, and get it sorted one way or another, your lenses are good for many years to come, unlike your camera.
Tell me, do you have the camera set to centre point focus, or the green auto position? If the latter, that's probably your problem. Change it to centre point and retest your lenses. Also, does it have the most up to date firmware?
I can't help but think that you are going about fixing this problem entirely the wrong way. There is another post in your other thread re the FA35 from a user who had a similar, if not the same, problem. Pentax fixed it.
Regards,

I think it's quite an expensive experiment buying and selling really good glass when there's obviously a problem with the camera..
Have you actually contemplated sending the camera back to Pentax for a check?
The 70mm has tickled my fancy but a black FA 77 I prefer....

I had a black 77mm but sold it to Unlocker as it wasn't too compatible either. It was the nicest lens you could hope to have. I still have the FA43 though, I forgot to put that on the list, it sort of works most of the time. The 35mm is too close to the 43 so one of them has to go and it's not the 43.
