The world's most expensive photograph

Someone paid $4.3 million for this .

What do you think? Would you pay that for it, assuming you had that sort of cash lying around (which of course you all do )?

I can see the attraction - but $4.3 million? Click on the link at the end of the article too - now I might pay $4.3 for that .

I'd be quite pleased if I'd created it - it's got a nice mix of geometrical abstractness and reality. But with a $4m price tag, meh.

Especially since to create the clean lines, he cloned out the bits in the background that he didn't like, as I mentioned earlier, but here's the link I found again..

Tate article...

Gursky digitally erased buildings on the far side of the river from his picture. This manipulation enhances the image visually, giving it more formal coherence. Rather than the sense of a specific place, the picture conveys an almost Platonic ideal of a body of water traversing as landscape. Gursky talks about this image in terms of its contemporaneity, saying, ‘I wasn’t interested in an unusual, possibly picturesque view of the Rhine, but in the most contemporary possible view of it. Paradoxically, this view of the Rhine cannot be obtained in situ; a fictitious construction was required to provide an accurate image of a modern river’ (quoted in ‘... I generally let things develop slowly’, Andreas Gursky: Fotografien 1994-1998, p.ix).

I mean, puhlease...

(I have no qualms about slagging it, and its price tag. If someone had paid me $4m for one of my pictures, I wouldn't give a damn what anyone thought of it . Of course, if any no-name tog had taken it, no one would be paying that for it.)

I love this sort of photograph, which sort of transcends mundanity... its an antidote to those lovely 'pretty' landscape photographs we are saturated with. I like the subtlety of the colours and tones, and the simplicity of the horizontal lines.

I was a bit surprised and slightly disappointed that he cloned elements out though, I thought the whole point of his pictures was that they are so real and unadorned. The fact that reality can look so much like an abstract painting would be more impressive than photoshopping reality to look like an abstract painting.

Would I pay 4.3 mill? Hell no, it's a photograph at the end of the day. It is reproducable. I would however buy a print of it to hang on my wall.

No originality or intellectual rigour Sean, and you have not built an international reputation for yourself... sorry! It's maybe worth £15 as an A3 print

It is very nice though and I would have been delighted to have taken it.

To be honest, I wouldn't want to. But I guess that's what makes this original, that nobody else wants to do it either.

If I get a chance I might try to find something like this and photoshop all the interesting bits out. Only as long as you'll buy it off me, of course!

Edit: I see Shaun got in first!
