The new DA 18-270mm lens

Link Posted 27/11/2012 - 09:13
So who has this lens, and how good is it.

It's heavier than the 18-135mm , but is it as good?

I would love to have the 18-135mm as my (always on lens), but are there any reviews on the 18-270mm lens?

I don't think it is available yet.

300 quid mark up over the Tamron Nikon fit for what is basically the same lens!!

disgusting,sheer profiteering
odd lens or 2

It doesn't even have VC like the Tamrons do, so it it isn't even identical, which makes the price difference even worse.

It is cheaper here than in the UK. Hopefully the price will drop soon.

Final street price will be what counts, so it will be a while before we look at buying this one.

At the SRS open day the nice man from Pentax said they are NOT the same optics. The body is the same but Pentax have installed their own optics. .....Whatever that means
Whether that means they have changed the design or just replaced some elements I don't know so hopefully they have improved this already well regarded lens.
He did say the price was a problem....... and they would be feeding that back to Japan. They might get away with a slight premium but almost doubling the price was a non starter for almost everyone.

Sorry for being Cynical, but a Tamron body with different optics?
Not likely! The body is designed for a certain glass configuration, changing the elements, means changing the body that surrounds them.

I would accept and agree that Pentax have changed the coating for the optics to their SMC covering, which is far more likely, but the elements themselves? Never!

Lets hope the feedback gets back to Japan and we - the customers - can see beyond their pricing ploy and they will adjust accordingly.

I shall await your test report John

It seems Pentax are labelling this one SDM as well, so never say never regarding changing the optics. In truth, at this point we have no idea what they have or haven't done.
Best regards, John

Changing the optics may just be a different coating.

The 18-250 was the same lens but different coatings....

Let's all wait until John gets a chance to try out this lens, then I'm sure he'll give us his unbiased opinion.

I eagerly await his test results
