Hello, I see you're making a decision now on your lens upgrade ....
http://www.pentaxforums.com/lensreviews/hd-pentax-da-55-300mm-f45-63-ed-plm-wr-r...
Based on that review at PentaxForums then with the latest firmware, then yes, the lens will work with the K50. They say there that a camera made from 2013 onwards would be ok (apart from the K500).

From Ricoh's website regarding the K-50.:
Changes to V1.10
Corresponded to [KAF4 lens mount] that is equipped with an electromagnetic diaphragm control system.
Enable new lens HD PENTAX-DA 55-300mmF4.5-6.3ED PLM WR RE to shoot stable by updating firmware.
Improved stability for general performance.
The update is here: http://www.ricoh-imaging.co.jp/english/support/digital/k-50_s.html

I took delivery of the new Pentax 55-300mm PLM lens late this afternoon. I hope to give it a good go in the morning among the gulls at the back of my home. Also I hope to post some decent shots in the forum.

Pop down to the docks with it and get some moody views (no, not moody blues!)

Please bear in mind that I am no pundit with regard to photography. My first impressions with the new Pentax 55-300mm PLM lens are rather good. The AF is very fast and with little or no hunting. Below should be just three of about seventy that I took this morning. They have only been cropped and minimally enhanced in Elements 13.

They are not works of art but after my long lay off and my first effort with the new lens, I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Its a funny thing: I went for the 55 - 300mm lens and finished up replacing the camera! K-70 now, so comparing outcomes with previous K-50 efforts. I have now matched the K-50 with the Tamron - so still a step behind you Gedski.

Perspicador, I've only used the new 55-300 PLM lens the once, mainly due to the wet and very cold weather but if first impressions are continued then it is well worth the upgrade. The AF is very fast. Still not as fast as the Canon or Nikon but I'm not sure that is too far behind.
Apparently locally, Wednesday is supposed to be a fairly mild and pleasant day so I will be out for a fuller test of said lens.
