On princple alone, i'm not prepared to pay more than what the cashback would have given the early adopters

Sold my k7 to purchase the 5 but held off to see how the stains issue played out. I'm making do with the k20 i picked up second hand last summer but rarely used.....until now

I've decided to do the same, on the whole I'm very happy with the results from my K20D and the more I read about sensor stain & BF/FF issues with the K5 the more I think I'm happy to wait a little longer until they've definitely been sorted...I never buy a new model car for the same reaason as it seems these days new product testing is done by the first customers!!

Having recently bought a K-R & tested a K-5 in the shop i am certainly looking to upgrade. The response & speed of the K-5 & K-R are superb. As much as I love my GX20 I think the time is now nearly near to upgrade...

I ordered my K-5 from Amazon on Thursday when it was briefly 954, but via a cashback scheme that gives 5%, so 906 in the end. Close enough to my target 900...

It is a huge leap over my GX10. Anything at ISO 400 or up is clearly better, particularly due to the nature of the shadow noise. Live View is absolutely perfect for close-up and critical focussing stuff. I've just calibrated the AF for four lenses, to get the best results they are all on wildly differing settings - couldn't do that before. The GX10 never really gave reliable critical focus.

All told I'm very pleased with it.

Just comparing the discounts on the 60D/7D and the D7000 with the K5. Serious price reductions over similar periods in relation to the K5, which when you take the cashback offer into consideration is more expensive now than it was in November (maybe earlier)?

Can this be rationally explained?

Maybe down to great reviews.

Smaller sales numbers normally means higher price.

Plain profiteering by the importer.

What principle is that?

The price of an item is the point where supply equals demand. There are no principles involved.

Actually the early adopters didn't get cash back - it was the second wave who got the cash back.
You can wait forever for the price to drop on something. By the time it drops to a level you are willing to pay there is something newer and better being announced, which you'd rather have - but it's too expensive. So you never buy a new model. Or you can just cough up and enjoy your camera.

The K20D was available with Cash Back for around £450 after that it was usually around £570. It might have dropped to around £530 at the end and SH ones were going for about £450.... so don't always assume that prices will come down.

Yes and the more people like me (i.e with principles :wink the quicker we'll see the price going down to the cashback price. If I'm one the few who are holding out and they are flying off the shelves regardless then so be it. I try and not let consumerism consume my thinking on these things. It's not at the price I'm willing to pay so I'll hold out and see what happens.

If you can't afford it, then that's another matter. No need to dress it up with spurious talk of principles.

By the way, I am delighted that Pentax has such a successful camera on its hands. This can only be good for people who like the brand, and what it stands for.

The difficulty over stained sensors led the usual suspects to make silly prognostications concerning reputation, etc.. In fact, the way in which Pentax addressed the issue and apologised frankly has if anything enhanced their reputation.

The fact that the camera is flying off the shelves is proof of that.

Thats some screwed up logic there georgie boy

Please explain how someone who is prepared to buy a camera at 900 pounds "cannot afford" the extra 70 pounds? I suggest you don't dwell anymore on what are my own internal principles on the matter and leave me to my own devices. Smart $$s replies from the likes of yourself do nothing for the reputation of this forum

Seany boy, I abhor sloppy thinking.

Let me repeat. There are no principles involved here. If you wish not to pay current prices, that is your prerogative.
