Shame they didn't make it a quasi "macro" lens, I could have got rid of the 21mm, 35mm macro and 40mm.

well, I'm very interested in it. It will come down to flare control with me. If its great, I'll replace my DA* 16-50 & the DA 40 with it and a DA 15 Limited.

Talking of flare - it includes a bundled hood (MH-RA55) but no images of that yet...

But anyway I will probably stay with my 17-70. Not as fast at the wide end but if I want compact, moderately fast and wide I have the GR

Bit bigger than I thought it would be actually.

Looks good on the camera though.

I'd like to see this lens at anything other than 30mm, to see how the length changes. The hood would be nice to see too, as ltd series hoods are often oddities.

I have a feeling we're looking at the hood in place.

the more I look at this the more interesting it seems

Let's hope the reviews/tests make the price tag look like a bargain

I still prefer sigma 18-35/1.8.

Yup I'd get that rather than the 20-40

If the IQ of the 20-40mm meets a certain level it could be a killer product IMO. Only issue then is saving the money for it. Its the same price/size as the FA31mm roughly and a lot more versatile.

Compared to the sigma its small, has WR and silent.

I can imagine this setup... The 20-40mm would be glued on to the camera body... the others in the bag if they would fit

15mm DA f4
20-40mm HD DA f2.8-4
50mm M f1.7
100mm WR f2.8

If the IQ was good enough I'd be tempted to part with my FA 35mm f2 to help afford it. Something I thought I'd never even vaguely consider selling.

Comparing the pictures of the lens alone with the one on the camera I think you are right - rather minimalist to say the least!

May bode well for flare resistance, could be that Pentax are pretty confident

This comment should be taken with a pinch of salt as I am always changing my mind and rarely dip my hand in my pocket for a new lens but here goes anyway

I have wanted a 15 ltd for a while and nearly bought one on a few occasions but just can't quite justify it's benefits and limitations with the cost

Then David Storm and others have made a good case for the 12 - 24 (nearly made a bid for the Samsung one John sold recently) but again there are trade offs with what I want compared to the costs etc so I am left not making my mind up and then this lens appears and has me thinking the following (and boring my better have with it earlier as well - although she seemed happy with the idea if it gives her some peace)

Maybe the lens set up that may suit my 'wants' the most would be as follows;

A Sigma 10-20 and the new Pentax 20 - 40

As long as the 20 - 40 is as good as we hope I am prepared 'maybe' to go down this route then of course the potential new 12-28 may change my mind again

I will have to wait and see

The more I think about this lens the more I like it and the cleverer I think the design team. On its own it might seem a little odd but the real strength of this lens is that it partners so well to form a really useful kit in many situations.

This with the DA15 and a short telephoto would make an excellent travelogue kit. I mean just about perfect to get those NG quality shots.

For landscape it is a great partner to a wide zoom as it extends the range very usefully. It doesn't take up too much extra space in the bag and it gives a WR option if the wide zoom isn't (Sig10-20, DA12-24). It is a very good range for landscape in it's own right. I really like 28mm-35mm on APSC for landscape - it feels the most natural perspective to me

For street/urban walkaround then it gives the WR option as well as the bonus of silent operation. You could pop a fast prime in your pocket where visual discretion or wide aperture is required.

I'm sure a constant f2.8 or wider range would have meant a significant compromise to the size. It's not super compact but as long as IQ is top notch, and I see no reason why it shouldn't be with the Ltd pedigree, I reckon it is the perfect compromise for many situations.

Nice one Ricoh.

If I had any money this would be the lens I would have...... Sadly the price probably wouldn't come down all that much. I could lose all my other lenses, small and WR perfect on the K5. Maybe with the high ISO performance of the cameras they felt a constant 2.8 wasn't necessary? I love my DA* 16-50 but it is big....... Really big! This looks like exactly the sort of thing that would suit me.

Imagine it on a K-01!!!!
