Love the framing in the last one; I think if the foreground players were sharp (and the background guy out of focus) it wouldn't have worked so well.

Yes I think the focus focussed on the guy in the background after the player jumped as he was in focus before the jump

#2 for me Gary, pity about the focus on the last one or it would have got the vote

How did you find the DA*50-135? when I tried it under floodlights it seemed slow to focus but then it may have been my AF.C settings were not set right.

My Sigma 70-200 APO performed much better both under floodlights and a low northern afternoon sun, don't wish to hijack your thread so I'll put the pics in another thread later today.
Cheers
Brian.

I use centre spot and af-s then constantly repress the shutter button to readjust focus, i find that method better than af)c.

never had any issues with the focus on the 50-135 as i shoot alot under difficult conditions i guess i just got used to it now.

Gary you know full well that Pentax can't do sports or low light, so stop doing it please, you'll be giving the gear a good name!
Lovely shots there, as always, you have the skill sir, in spades!
Love your Gig/nightclub work and I'm now becoming more and more envious of your stadium work too, you'll have to go!
Cheers Jules...

Nice set Gary. My favourite is by far and away the last one.

Number 2 is great Gary.

Sorry, but for me I'd have to put the last shot in the category of "the one that got away" because of the focus.

Brian - regardless of the relative AF performance of the 50-135 compared to the Sigma 70-200 I would still generally prefer the latter because the shallower DOF at f2.8 helps blur a distracting background when the action is further away and I can zoom out to 135mm if the players get close. This isn't a problem in Gary's pictures here because the (mostly) empty stands are much better than the messy backgrounds at the tiny grounds I go to - the downside of 200mm wide open is a greater likelihood of the "one that got away"

I see #3 as a picture of the player in the striped shirt, the foreground puts him in context, but is beautifully out of focus. Even if it was an accident

I think the last shot shows how quick focus is in the k*5 mkii. The jumping player was in focus pre jump.

#2 is by far the best in terms of freezing action. You pressed the shutter button just right that time. superb shot!!

None the less there's something missing focus wise on most of these and frankly I'd like to see to see what Gary could do with a brand that has equipment properly capable of action sports.

This really is the most demanding of photographic genres and I'm not convinced Pentax can cut it yet.

All of these shots are artistically great and technically lacking. This points to great photographer and lacking gear.

Pentax R&D should read this thread.

The creative aspect is right up here, very good action, very well framed, very good viewpoints.

Focus is clearly off in the last but I'm wondering whether some of the softness in others could be down to a not quite fast enough shutter speed. In the header shot for instance the boots are sharp and in focus whereas the head is a little blurred and that would be consistent with motion blur on the faster moving parts of the scene.
