SMC A50mm f1.2 vs FA 43mm f1.9 limited

Thank you for your informative comment! I like the idea of a threaded metal hood for the A50mm f1.2. I already have a square 52mm hood (PH-S52) that I use on my K28mm f3.5, and that theoretically will fit the A50mm, but it is quite shallow and flimsy. Would it be possible to use the same kind of threaded hood for both these lenses?

Since the angle of view of both lenses is different, one of the lens would suffer with a hood common for both.

If you get a hood that's right for the 28mm, it would let too much extraneous light on the front element of the 50mm lens.

On the other hand, if you get a hood that covers just the field of view of the 50mm lens, you will have some vignetting caused by the hood on the 28mm lens.

A 28mm on APS-C is very close to a "Standard Lens" (35mm) in terms
of angle of view so the "Standard Lens Hood" may be OK.

In fact I use a Heliopan 52mm Hood on my SMC 28-80mm with
a 58-52mm stepdown ring and it doesn't vignette and the
a 52mm lens cap fits the Heliopan Hood. Oddly the outside
diam. of the Heliopan 52mm is exactly the same as the barrel
of the SMC 28-80mm

This is a 46mm ebay_link Heliopan hood which although an odd
size has some good photos showing how they manage 46mm at
both ends.

Some people on the US forum are using the Heliopan 58mm short hood on the 31mm LTD, so it mustn't vignette. See pictures of how the cap still
fits... link

Just checked the Heliopan 58mm short hood on a Sigma 24mm f/2.8 at f/2.8, f/8 and f/11 and it doesn't vignette. It doesn't even vignette with the Sigma butterfly hood on top of the Heliopan. The Heliopan protrudes 14.5mm.

The Chinese 49mm protrudes 20.5mm. I'm going to order a 52mm to see
if it will work with the Sigma 24mm.

Thanks guys! I have been doing some research on prices and availability, and ended up with ordering a Heliopan 52mm short metal hood from Teamwork Digital, and I will check how it works with both the A50mm f1.2 and my K28mm f3.5. I also like the design with double threads, thus being able to keep it permanently attached to a lens and using the original cap.

I agree with everything Robbie has said in this thread. And his photos agree with me.

I tend to use the 43 Limited about ten times as often as the super-fast 50, because I value the rendering and compact build over the soft bloomy wide aperture. Both are great lenses.

Thanks Robin! It has really been interesting to hear your experiences and learn more about these lenses. Although I already have decided to go for the A50mm f1.2 (it is on its way from Austria), the FA43 is at the top of my "wish list" for future indulgence in mild/moderate LBA

Bjørn, you will be well pleased with one of Pentax's many fine lenses.

My new toy arrived today Luckily the lens was in super condition, it looks as if it came straight from the Pentax factory. Although 450 Euro was maybe a bit high, this lens is worth it. Here in Norway the A50mm f1.2 is quite rare, and command even higher prices than what I paid.

My first test of the lens, wide open and no PP apart from slight exposure adjustment:

The bokeh on the 2nd one shows why this lens is so popular.

Certainly not a 'gimmick'

bjolester, congrats on joining the 1.2 club - You won't regret it. Try it on some street scenes @ 1.2 too when you get chance. not easy to focus, but when you nail it, it's great

Thanks! Obviously this lens has its strongest selling point being f1.2. But based on my initial shooting today, the lens is also superb for landscapes, stopped down a bit. Shots taken at f5.6 and f8 are razor sharp, and also have the most wonderful color tones. I love it already

Lovely shots! The close-up portrait (no 1) and the less than stellar piece of furniture are my favourites. Are these all really taken @f1.2?
