My only complaint with this site is about the notification reset time which is just reseting a flag on their server.
My advice to anyone on this site is don't install any software you really don't need. A lot of the cheap utilities are just junk and a lot of other stuff lurks in the background unnoticed, waiting to be used.

Exactly my thoughts - and the don't install software you don't need is a very important piece of advice, particularly pertinent to less experienced users

From what I can see, the problem seems to lie with some adverts not loading and causing everything to hang, so I wonder if those of us who use AdBlocker have the same speed problem?

Loaded AdBlocker a couple of days ago and since then the loading delay (usually about 1 minute) has totally gone And no more delays changing page.
Always blame the equipment!!!!

I tried Adblock Plus and it has ended up hanging on "waiting for adblock plus" rather than "waiting for googleads..." which seemed a bit pointless really.
I've decided it's back to waiting for the ads to load. Much of the time this is not a problem, there just seem to be rogue ads now and again.

That's interesting, John. I use AdBlock -- which is unconnected, oddly, to AdBlock Plus -- and the maximum time I have to "wait" for the extension is under a second. Some on the internet have voiced fears over potential security issues with both these products but the consensus among the chaps who should know about these things is that both are safe to use.

Over the past years that i've worked here i've gone through countless support tickets with members who experience page loading issues. 90% of the time, its down to a software issue on their computer OR they are simply running an extremely old, out of date software/hardware which just can't cope with the demands of today's websites.
While adblockers may seem like a quick fix, you are merely masking the problem. More than likely its a problem with Adobe Flash or a confliction with another plugin or browser setting. Furthermore, you are cutting off the primary revenue stream which keeps the team employed, the servers paid for and Pentax User running.
I'm not saying that you have to put up with slow page loads, i'm merely advising that perhaps investigating the problem further is the answer. I am aware that some of the latest releases of Adobe Flash have been extremely buggy and because of this, advertisers are moving away from Flash ads and opting for more traditional non-animated ads.

As someone who doesn't believe in something for nothing, I'd rather pay and not have ads (I never looked at them so the advertisers wouldn't get any advantage out of slowing my computer down anyway). I stopped subscribing to PU+ for this reason, preferring to support sites that don't have ads. Unless PU control the ads (unlikely as I've seen ads for many other manufacturers on this site) you're at the mercy of your ad provider. Animated ads are really annoying. I'd never install software I don't need, most is buggy if not a security risk or a trojan waiting to strike (remember OpenSSL).

I don't put up with slow page loads, I have a limit, anything that takes longer is binned. My browser now refuses to run flash apps - so my loading of this site is now much faster and animated ads don't appear. As an 'old school' web developer, I believe you should be able to provide a service that doesn't 'wait for googleads...' almost continually.

Just because your browser says its waiting for googleads doesn't mean you have to. These are loaded using asynchronous code which means you can continue to browse the page while the ads are still loading. I'm pretty sure the problems others are experiencing could have been fixed by a little bit of troubleshooting, but installing an adblocker is a quick and easy fix I suppose at the detriment of Pentax User.
I'm sure if we were to remove all ads of the site, everyone on here would be more than happy to pay a subscription fee which is possibly 10x the amount it is now just so we can continue to keep the site running. Websites like Pentax User aren't free to setup and run you know.
Like it or not, display advertising supports most sites on the internet. What we are starting to find on the internet is that due to all this blocking of ads, websites are starting to create 'organic advertising' which appears as real content (ie: a forum topic discussing a product, a gallery photo advertising a product, etc) which can often be more intrusive and ad blocking software won't be able to to distinguish if its an ad or not.

That's not my experience. I find that IE11 will wait while the ads are downloaded - this might be in the form of drawing the whole page but stopping me scrolling until the ads are here, or sometimes it only shows some of the page. I also find this on Pistonheads forum, but their advert seems to load more quickly, maybe there are fewer on the page.
My original issue went away, as you suggested in the support ticket dialogue it was likely to be a specific advert that was slow. I haven't been watching this thread because I had some general internet performance issues that meant any site that wasn't tip-top performance wasn't worth even trying to open.
I take the point about Chrome, but I don't like it as much as I like IE11. Things are in different places, and some of it's features just annoy me. I don't see why any sane web site developer would ignore IE and just recommend that users switch over to something else, and that kind of comment (which I accept wasn't from PU staff or mods) just harks back to the browser wars of the nineties. For me, the most annoying thing out is when someone has a perfectly good web site, then announces that they've redesigned it and are now switching to a "responsive" site design. If any modern term is more of a misnomer than "responsive site", I can't think of it - usually this means "loading massive amounts of javascript, animations and moving everything around so you can't find it".
But I've descended into a general rant now, much of it isn't aimed at this specific site. It's still quite jumpy to load, but (even on my mobile broadband) it's usable. And as I think about it, I seem to recall having a similar issue with a slow advertisement causing issues on the old-style PU site as well.

Further to my previous post about not installing software you don't need, IE is the company standard for the multi-national I work in. It's not unusual for web page issues reported by users to be resolved by removing or disabling IE add-ons and that includes Microsoft's own Bing. Go to Tools - Internet Options - Programs - Manage add ons. Some such as Java and your anti-virus should be left enabled. Disable anything to do with shopping or searching. Your choice can always be switched back on if 'off' causes a problem.
I'd also suggest downloading the free version of Malwarebytes. Let it update and run a full scan on the PC. You may be surprised at what it finds. The free program does not give continuous protection but a one off scan will often find things other anti-virus programs miss. You can uninstall it afterwards. I have no association with them by the way.

Russ - I know your intentions are good, but suggesting a download just by the name of the product can be dangerous. There are some nasty people/companies out there who will promote a same named product which can appear higher in Search Engine lists than the genuine version and an unknowledgeable person may well install and run it may then ppear to do what it should but can include malware/Trojans/viruses etc. I know of this technique because I recommended Nod23 from a company called ESET (one of the best AV programs IMO) to a colleague who downloaded a copy and ended up with a whole load of trouble (ended up re-building machine), and he was quite IT savvy.

Thanks, I take your point.
The official download page is
https://www.malwarebytes.org/downloads/
LennyBloke is right, always make an effort to obtain software from the official site. If in doubt don't.

My take is different, I avoid installing additional apps/programs on my computer as much as possible. If a website doesn't respond fast enough (or at all), I'd rather not bother with it before downloading an unknown 'app' hoping it fixes it. Poor web design/implementation is rife and most sites today are orientated around maximising ad revenue rather than providing a 'service'.

We're not saying you need to download an app to fix a website, we're saying there could be something nasty on your computer that's conflicting with that site (ie: browser hi-jack, advert hi-jack, etc).
What if you unknowingly downloaded and installed some malicious software by visiting an infected site, reading an email, or bundled in some other software and this software is causing performance issues in your web browser? It's pretty common.
This is often how malware and adware get on peoples computers. The user usually doesn't actively install this garbage on their computer. Even the most computer savvy users are infected from time to time. It's recommend that anyone who has a computer connected to the internet should have an up-to-date, regularly ran anti-virus, firewall software and regularly scan for malware/adware. I also recommend Malwarebytes. I use it myself and it's one of the most popular programs on the net for tackling malware/adware.

If problems are Java related it is worth checking you have the latest version as updates occur quite frequently. For Windows, go to Control Panel, open Java, go to the Update tab. The latest version of Internet Explorer may help too.
No one who is Internetwise uses IE anymore. It's absolute rubbish and has never properly supported HTML.
