Bought one of these used off Ebay to compare against the DA* 50-135mm because of the Pentax slow AF speed. Arrived today and I have to say I am quite impressed with the lens, not sure it is much faster focusing though.

Camera: Pentax K10D
Exposure: 1/3000 sec
Aperture: f/2.8
Focal Length: 68 mm
ISO Speed: 100

Hi Mike,
Nice Shot but i think that you might find that the limiting factor regarding focusing speed is more due to the Camera rather than the lens, I use the 50-135 on the K7 and it is fast and silent!

Regards - Pete.

The Sigma 100-300mm DG EX f4 arrived today ... screwdrive AF is faster on this compared to SDM on the DA* 60-250mm f4.

Rather nice wide open as well.

As much as I like playing with these lenses my bank balance has taken a serious hit because of them in the last few months .. I think I have got to sell some on before the wife notices

Not just due to the camera unfortunately, wish it was that simple. The K20 with the Sigma 100-300 F4 is faster than the K-7 with a DA* 50-135 or DA* 60-250 for example.

Was going to sell the Sigma when I got the DA* 60-250, and indeed it did sit in SRS's window for a month or so til I realised just how slow at focussing the DA* was. The Sigma is kept now purely for when I know I'm expecting some action shots, footy etc.

Looks like you got a good copy of the 100-300 Mike, mine is the non DG version and is a little soft, tempted to get the DG one myself and sell the other one on.

Was the 100-300mm DG EX f4 new Mike? I can see why your bank balance is taking a hit

Mind you everything I have read about this lens seems very positive. Shame it's not weather sealed... having said that I might be temped to pull the trigger on one at some point

Nope, £580 off Ebay ... immaculate condition and came boxed with a Hoya Pro UV filter. I have been after one ever since I got the MKI Sigma 70-200mm APO EX f2.8 which is a fabulous lens. The idea is that if the 100-300mm works well with the Sigma 1.4x DG EX teleconverter then I can sell the Bigma, the Pentax F* 300mm f4.5 and possibly (although I doubt it) the Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4

A fellow Mk1 Sigma 70-200mm user.....I'm impressed.

Mine is soldered in place.

Wax Oil works a treat against weather. If its good enough for Lada's, it OK by me.

Every time I go out the door I take a bag with K10D and 70-200mm f2.8 attached, along with Sigma 1.4x TC, Sigma 24-60mm f2.8 and Pentax DA 35mm f2.8 Macro. The only time I change that setup is if I know I am going somewhere different.
