Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5 vs Pentax 18-55 II/WR

Hi folks

I am looking for some advice.

I currently own the Sigma and love it apart from its awful performance into the light.

My previous Pentax 18-55II was seemingly sharp, had the Pentax colours and was great into the light.

Finances are so tight I am looking at selling the Sigma (which I bought on here) and using some of the cash (if I sell it!!!) to purchase one of the 18-55s.

The Sigma is faster, a little sharper.

The Pentax is lighter, has better contrast and colours.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

If you aren't happy with the Sigma then there is no point keeping it but personally I would look at the Pentax 16-45mm f4 rather than the 18-55mm. You can pick up a used one for not much more than £100 these days and it punches well above it's price bracket.

Hi Simon

I'm a bit surprised you want to sell the Sigma. I have the Sigma 17-70 F2.8-4 and find it superior to all the Pentax zooms I've owned in a similar focal length. It works great into the sun too. I've had the 18-55 (numerous copies), 16-45 and 17-70 Pentaxes and of these I liked the 16-45 the best, but the limited zoom range frustrated me. I tend to agree with Mike, the 16-45 is definitely a step up from the 18-55.

Hi both

Many thanks for replying.

It is the flare and low contrast when shooting into the light that I find problematic.

I had an 18-55 ii that blew the Sigma out of the water in such circumstances.

I'll pop some images on in the morning.

Cheers
