Shooting RAW and JPEG at same time K5iis

Someone recently told me that some DSLRs can be set up to shoot and store both a RAW and JPEG at the same time. Is this possible with K5iis?

Set the capture format to RAW+ and the camera will save both formats. You can also decide whether you want PEF or DNG RAW files.

Yes - Select File Format in the Rec Mode 1 menu and select the RAW + option.

Just come in from a shooting some waders and found the RAW plus option. Thanks for posting though Phil & John. Only just starting to shoot RAW having spent the first part of my photographic journey thoroughly getting to grips with lenses, speeds, apertures etc and shooting JPEGs - RAW is bit of revelation!

You can also access the setting on the control panel (press info button), It's a quick way to reach it.

There's a RAW button also on the front of the camera, near where the lens attaches, and this can be configured in the custom menu to control the RAW / RAW pus option with a single press.

You don't actually need to waste card space by choosing RAW+, just select RAW. There's a JPEG embedded in the RAW which has all of your camera settings applied.
Just open the RAW in Faststone Image Viewer and then save the image which opens first (it's the JPG). TO access the RAW in Faststone simply press 'A" after the JPG loads.
The reason there's an embedded JPG is for the camera preview (and zoom when you're chimping) It's not an inferior version of a JPG either. Depending on the camera model (and your JPG settings) it will either be the exact same resolution or very slightly smaller.

There's also another free utility which you might like to try called Instant JPEG From RAW

Quote:
Instant Jpeg From Raw (IJFR) is a Windows® and Macintosh® utility that extracts the native JPEG image that is embedded in RAW files. The utility is available
from your cursor’s context-sensitive menu by right-clicking (or Ctrl-clicking on a Mac) anytime a Raw file is selected on your PC.

Get it here:
http://michaeltapesdesign.com/instant-jpeg-from-raw.html

It's been around for many years, always surprises me how so many people don't know about the embedded JPGs in RAW.

Note: I've used this method with every Pentax DLSR I've had since 2004. I still use it with my Olympus OM-Ds and PEN.

Steve, I have to question this ....I accept that there's an embedded JPEG within the RAW file in order to provide the LCD preview image on the camera, and some catalogue programmes will use it for thumbnail displays ...... But could there really be a decent sized JPEG saved within the RAW?

I wonder because my K7 RAW files are usually around 12-15mb ..... But my max quality JPEGs are around 7-10mb! Could a JPEG even approaching this quality possibly be buried within the RAW file as well .... Surely if it was I'd be looking at RAW files more like 18-20mb ... ?

Yes.
In the case of my K-7 DNG or PEF files the resolution is different by only a few pixels;
RAW 4684 x 3122 embedded JPG 4672 x 3104

Yes.. But using FASTSTONE or IJFR you save the JPG using whatever compression ratio you choose. I always choose 80% IQ, but you may choose 100% IQ if you like bigger data (more megabytes) without any visible advantage.

Hmmm.... How do you know that the embedded JPEG you're referring to, the one that is only a little smaller in resolution than the RAW, is not actually a rendered and processed output from your software? On the surface that would seem to be the only logical explanation for what you are seeing. I just can't see how such a substantial JPEG could be buried within the RAW file without adding significantly to the RAW file sizes in MB.....

There's some discussion on the web regarding this, so if you Google it there's plenty to research.

Try this little experiment. Take a couple shots using raw only. One with the jpeg setting at the smallest, the other at the largest. Then enlarge the previews in camera to 100% and see the jaggies on the smaller image whereas the larger one is fine. I used to think the same but am now pretty sure Steve is correct.
Confirm the differences by saving out the embedded jpegs.
It can still be worth saving both raw+jpeg as some software cannot render the raw files so without processing you wouldn't know what the image was. It also gives a duplicate in case the image gets malformed in the camera. (Can happen if you switch the camera off while images are still in the buffer, so I've found.)
To be doubly sure I take raw+jpeg in both slots now. Just because you have four images doesn't mean you have to keep them all, but helps to ensure you have at least one in case a card goes bad.

A good example John.

I'll try that on my other brands as well. Not that I'll use the extracted JPEG for anything.

Really its only use is the in-camera preview, or as a reference file if thumbnail library software cannot render the raw.

Ha, you're just cherry picking there
I suggest more research. There is plenty of legit information on the web. Facts are facts, they are easily found and tested rather than posting screenshots from random posters pretending they are pasting replies from camera a company email

Look chaps, I'm not going to argue with anyone about it, I have nothing to prove. You can do you own research and experimentation then come to you own conclusions and beliefs. It make zero difference to my years of experience.
I posted about JPEG from RAW for the benefit of the OP but if it helps others then all all the better.

Have a great weekend!
