Screen shows image not stored when photo taken

Posted 20/05/2020 - 19:09 Link
When I take pictures with my Pentax istD the image very briefly shows then the screen comes up black with the error 'image not stored'.

Has anyone got any idea on how I could fix this?
Thanks

You do have a memory card installed? Is it locked?

That or a faulty or incompatible card. Some of the newer larger capacity cards post date the camera which came out way back in 2003 so it simply doesn't understand them. The *ist D can only use SDHC and SD cards. This means that the largest card size that should work is 32GB. Try it with a 2 or 4 GB card and see if that helps.

Remove the compact flash memory card
Check the pins in the camera card slot making sure that any are not bent.
Check that the card is not locked.
Carefully reinsert the card and try again.

If you still have the same problem remove the card and try another card.

Do you have the ist D user manual? If not, it's here:

Try formatting the memory card before you begin taking photographs: see page 114

Thanks. It's the same memory card and it was working fine 2 days ago

In that case it sounds as if the card lock switch is likely to have switched without you realising. Very easy to do..
If it isn't that, there's only one other thing to try... another card. Maybe that one you've been using's simply gone bad.

I've just had an sd card jam in my K70. Managed to get the card out with fine pliers and when I looked at it the top and bottom halves of the card had parted and the lock switch fallen out. Appears to be a genuine Sandisk card but you can never be sure if it is these days.
