Ricoh GRIII set-up for quick use

The AF on the GRIII is pretty fast, and the addition of the touch-screen focus selection makes it very flexible and accurate - but there are times when you want to "snap" really quickly (street shooting for example), so the use of the Snap function means you can simply point and press (full press instead of the usual half-press to activate the focus) and it will take the shot with the lens set to the pre-configured distance (set in the Menu options). But if you're not keen on using the screen on the back to compose, then the GV-1 optical viewfinder (or GV-2 for a more compact version) coupled with turning the display off and using Snap focus can deliver great results.

I've been watching some Sean Tucker You Tube videos on the GRIII and I am taking another look. I have (ssshhh) a Sony RX100iii which I don't really use as much as I should - preferring to lug (happily) my K1, simply because I prefer the interface and output. What do you think to the GRIII?

I have too agree that the interface on the K1 feels right and natural to me (but then again I've evolved along with Pentax since the *ist DS) and I shoot Raw with the K1 and find the files great to process. I've got used to the menu system on the Ricoh but again part of that is due to familiarity with the GRII - but the speed of use of the GRIII (Snap function + AV @ f5.6 is my default) is superb - and the keeper rate is pretty high. The User modes are the next thing I need to set up (1 for B&W) as I've seen they can be used to great effect.

I can't compare to any other similar compacts but apart from the lack of WR the GRIII is an excellent tool for the job when the K1 is too big/heavy to lug around. Hope that helps a little

Yes, I've been with Pentax for over 30 years (since film) and like them. From what I've seen on the GR it is the simplicity of still shooting that attracts, I'd still use it in RAW and process in LR. Do you ever use the crop options or always at 28mm and then crop in processing?

No - I've not used the crop options - the MP count and quality of the sensor allows for significant cropping in processing.

I do have the Wide attachment - it's not something I use often, but "street shooting" is where it comes into its own - when I've been to Venice (with the GRII and Wide lens) it's really made some shots
