Problems with MediaImpression

Posted 29/10/2016 - 15:20 Link
I have been using MediaImpression 2.0 to download my pictures from a Pentax Optio RS1000 to my computer (Windows XP/Internet Explorer . A few days ago, the program would no longer open on the computer. I tried to download it online, but was informed it's no longer available. I took out my MediaImpression 2.0 disc that came with the camera, but it will no longer download. I've tried to download a newer MediaImpression file that I've found online, but the installation fails each time I try. Any suggestions?

No idea about the MediaImpression problem, it could be all manner of things. If you have a recent system backup you could try and restore it, failing that could you copy the files off the memory card directly and process them in an alternative program??
One thing might be worth trying first is to completely uninstall MediaImpresson, reboot and attempt a reinstall it from the disc.
There's a free MediaImpression 3 download here: http://ccm.net/download/download-14770-arcsoft-mediaimpression-free-edition which seems to have a valid download available. Download and install at your own risk as I haven't tried it myself; it's supposedly compatible with XP, Vista and Win7.
If program installations fail it could be evidence of having malware or corrupted system files on your PC, or a failing component/hardware issue.

Thanks for your response, John.

When I access the Control Panel in my computer and bring up Add and Remove Programs, the listing shows that Pentax MediaImpressions 2.0 is installed. However, when I try to remove it (with the intent to reinstall it), I get a message "An installation support file could not be installed. The system cannot find the file specified". I'm guessing that's why I'm not having any luck reinstalling the program from the disc.....It already thinks the program's there.

I tried the link you provided for the file manager, but although it'll download, it doesn't seem to have any provision for downloading photos......only video.

I've tried doing a System Restore of the whole computer, but I get messages saying the computer cannot be restored to the specified date. I've tried every restore point listed. I'm just about out of ideas. I'm considering doing a System Recovery, which would basically wipe the computer and put it back to the original date it was first turned on.

Can you remember when it last worked and what you might have installed in the meantime to give a clue?
Some other program may have overwritten something, ie two system files with the same name but really not the same!

Also some ideas here:
http://www.techradar.com/news/software/10-tips-for-removing-a-program-that-won-t...

and this:
https://turbofuture.com/computers/How-to-force-uninstall-a-program

and yet another (this looks to be XP related);

Another thought is to try something like Ccleaner to clean up the system and registry.

Doing a full system restore means you may not be able to get the many Windows updates that will have been available so may make the PC less secure.

I think I've finally got it solved. I'd been trying repeatedly to uninstall the program using the disc that came supplied with my camera. It finally seemed to disappear, but when I tried to reload the program, it kept failing at the 43% point, and the computer would shut down to hibernation. I was just about to give up when it occurred to me that I had a second MI 2.0 disc that came with a used Pentax that I'd bought on eBay a couple of years ago. The first disc must have been damaged, because it all went flawlessly when I tried it with the second disc. I ran the uninstall program again, and then reloaded the program with no problems. The program runs a lot faster now too......It used to take about 15 seconds to come when I called it, and now it loads in a couple of seconds, and uploading pictures goes a lot faster. It would seem I've been living with a three year old problem install that's now fixed.

Thanks for your help, John. I appreciate all your advice.

Glad you've got it solved. Welcome to the forum by the way, you can always upload some photos if you wish and take part in competitions etc. It's quite a friendly community and you don't have to have the latest camera!
