Problems connecting and external monitor

I picked up a Dell 2209WA on my recent trip back home which I'm now trying to connect to my laptop, but it (or rather the computer) is refusing to collaborate.

The monitor can detect no signal coming from the computer even though I have it connected with a VGA cable and a USB. When I connect the USB the computer makes the noise indicating it has detected something new being plugged in (though not with the VGA). However, when I try to manage my displays via the Control Panel, the computer does not seem to be able to locate the Dell monitor.

Do PUFers have anything to suggest? Any help much appreciated.

The USB cable has nothing to do with the monitor function - it's most likely a built-in USB hub with ports on the side of the monitor to save rummaging under the desk.

It sounds to me as though your laptop hasn't switched on its external monitor port, although I'm not entirely sure how to go about doing so - generally I open anything mentioning graphics or monitor settings until I find a likely-looking button, then press them until it does what I want!

Yes, I thought the USB wasn't critical.

I've also been trying to identify the VGA port, but can find nothing marked VGA in the Device manager.

It would help to know what OS you are running.

Firstly try going to the Dell website and finding the drivers. It may be that it needs to be manually installed.

If its a laptop , they sometimes have a dedicated function key to set the way the external display behaves. Not being too familiar with Dell its a guess.

Look for a screen function key and press it. It will probably cycle through LCD/External/Both changing the resolutions as it goes.

It may look like a little screen in a box or with lines each side.

If its not a laptop, ignore me.

Am using Vista!

I don't think I need a driver as I managed to get it working when I was in the UK.

Does your computer have a DVI port?I would try that to see if it made any difference.

The most likely explanation is that the video card isn't set to two monitor operation. You'll get to this my right clicking the desktop or via Control Panel.

Thanks, John.

I've gone to my Nvidia window and it recognises both a Laptop display and an Analogue Display (which I presume is the Dell). I've set the display mode to 'same on both displays', however I'm still not getting a picture.

I did something in 'Display settings' in the control panel which made it work in the UK, but can't for the life of me work out what it was. At the moment when I attempt to identify monitors it only id's the laptop one.

The monitor needs to be switched on and connected to the laptop before switching on the laptop. Otherwise, the laptop won't recognise the extra monitor.

In Display settings you should see an option to expand desktop to this monitor.

On my Dell Precision M65 laptop, Fn+F8 is the hotkey conbination to switch between different monitors.

Thanks, Terry.

I did try this earlier - though it was before I'd made various more recent adjustments so perhaps I should try again.

My laptop's not a Dell BTW - it's a Samsung.

As the man said, it's usually a function key ! Fn (in blue, next to crl usually) + one of your usual function keys marked with a vdu logo !!

It should cycle through the 3 combinations !

If you're connecting via DVI then surely you want it to show an extra digital display, not an analogue one?
