Is about 400 pounds a good price for this lens (used)?

And has anyone here used it? Comments?

Thanks.

Many people are happy to pay much more. If it's in good nick, and you want it, snap it up.

If you don't want it, I know somebody who is very interested. No prizes for guessing who.

I haven't seen a price recently but that certainly seems to be a reasonable price. As to using it, well it is big and bulky and seems to have attracted a poor reputaion for mechanical reliability. (It would have been better if they had made it IF). However, I have never had a problem with mine and I think it is a cracking lens. If you need the speed, you can't beat it. Super bright finder and excellent results.

It does attract attention though so if you are looking for a walkabout lens or something less obtrusive, go for the 29-70/4 AL. The results are very nearly as good, certainly from f5.6 and much more portable.

Thanks, the 31mm limited might have to wait. I think at this stage I need to fill that Gap, and I think this is the lens for it.

I'll let you know how I go.

Hmm, someone pipped me at the post on ebay. It would have been nice, but never mind. I might just wait for the new lineup coming out next year...or the limited...or...oh, I don't know

I think paying 300-350 for a new 24-90 if you can find it, it has a better range and only 1/2-1 1/2 stops darker, might be better.

All the 2.8 FA lenses and some of the telephotos I have seen s/h have always looked worse for wear...

I have beeen looking at the more recent pictures I have taken with the 24-90 lens and they have been crisp

The silver finish used on these lenses is mrked very easily so they do tend to look a bit the worse for wear. Fortunately, it doesn't affect the performance and can be a bargain price.

Having both the 28-70/2.8 and the 24-90, there is no comparison. The difference in finder brightness is very marked. The 28-70 is fixed aperture so manual exposure is much easier (no change with the zoom) and the performance is also markedly better. The 24-90 is a very good for a one lens portable outfit but doesn't compete on performance.
