The more I use primes, the more I'm re-learning composition. I was never much good at composition and it may be due to just me or me tending to use zooms and being lazy about the shot.

So prime or zoom?

With the exception of using zooms to photograph motorcycles at shows, I'm determined to stick to primes for everything else for the foreseeable future.

I quite like this framing by feet approach and have always considered an aperture ring to be a must have.

Primes for me. When I'm using a zoom lens I usually use either the wide or telephoto ends so I'd fare just as well with a couple of primes.

I usually carry the 20mm, 28-105mm and a portrait prime. The zoom rarely gets used!

Primes get us moving, which is always good for composition.

Took out my GR this Sunday for a walk around Oxford. Of course it is a 28mm prime, so no zooming or swapping lenses, and I did enjoy myself, moving around and looking for good composition. I should do this more often.

Curiously with zooms, I too am most frequently either zoomed right in or right out, and not so often in between.
