Perhaps it is being phased out in favour of the new 55-300mm lens?

ooh that sounds tempting. I have the tamron 70-300 zoom and ok its longer but have not been overawed with the quality. How does the quality of the Pentax 50-200 lens compare? if it is better then its kind of a no-brainer, i can sell my tamron for £50 i would imagine anyway, and if i want longer range can pick up a cheap teleconvertor.

If I was in the UK right now I would be into Jessops as fast as possible with my credit card to buy 40 or so.
Stick them on EBay at £75 each buy it now, brand new with warranty and allow international buyers, they would sell all day long.
Allowing for ebay and paypal charges (plus making a bit on postage) you should make £20 on each one.
That would just about cover a Pentax DA* 60-250mm f4
Edit: Still cant spell.
No equipment list here but thanks for taking an interest. My Flickr

Get a 50-200 for travelling light and, but keep the Tamron for its faster speed at 200mm (F4.5) as well as its greater reach.
The 50-200 is nice and small, doesn't suffer badly from purple fringing like the Tamron, has Quick Shift focusing, goes down to 50mm, but is not fast enough to use very satisfactorily with a teleconvertor, in my 'umble opinion.
The Tamron is generally sharper according to the MTF charts at www.photozone.de/pentax

thanks iceblinker, its the purple fringing that gets me with the Tamron, whenever it has to handle stark contrast, like recently a horserider with a black hat with a white band on it, the fringing was there. If the 50-200 is markedly better on that I'll seriously consider it for £50.

It is indeed markedly better on that. You may get a little bit of ordinary CA sometimes, but not the thick pure purple fringing that you often get with the Tamron.

Ordered and received confirmation plus Credit Card has had funds reserved.
With Jessops5 it came it at £47.50, so to avoid £5 P&P I added a lens cloth at £2.70 but it gave me another £1.50 off so I had to add another to push it over £50.
Just need to wait until monday now.
