Both taken in Paray-Le Monial France and processed in camera.

Very good. Which HDR setting did you use for the first shot? The second shot looks better if you click on it and then click again for full size. It's not appreciably larger, but it sharpens the overall image.....and cleans up the letters on the signs.

The second one is much better than the first IMO, in the first the HDR effect is too much and has created big halos around the edges of objects.

I like the simplicity and quality of the second shot.

Totally agree with David. In the first shot the halos don't look good. The second shot makes better visual sense and is a rather nice treatment that suits the subject.

Thanks for the comments. The first shot was processed in camera using the 'Tone Expansion' digital filter. Whilst I appreciate it might look rather overdone and not to everyone's taste, I really like the artistic effect.

It actually takes normal shots rather well Stan!!

For me the white haloing spoils any artistic effect. It looks like a badly applied Local adjustment brush in Lightroom. Each to their own though.

The second shot is nicely French. The first one is probably an acquired taste. But then I am boringly conservative when it come to photographic techniques and effects...
I'm certain I've been to Paray-le-Monial but just when I can't remember.
Best wishes,

Andrew
