Well you're looking for extension tubes, filled with fresh air that block extraneous photons.

Not getting K-3 or new lenses (wild assumption).

Bit of a thin joke.
Lurking is shirking.!

Yeah, looks like I ended up being pulled in a third direction. I think I will get another lens or 2 though as well - lots of suggestions to consider thanks to everybody. Very pleased I can keep the K7 though!

I couldn't really see a huge advantage of moving to one of the K5 varients - not many more pixels for cropping and I'm not doing low-light / high ISO flowers. It seems in summary that most here feel that the extra cropping potential from a K3 would only add up to a fairly small IQ increase on the final image (with my current glass), and that better close-focussing optics (however its done) will ultimately give better quality even on the K7.

So Glass NOT Pixels ... now, I have to find out more about those photon blocker things ....

Hi Greg.

You've got a 28mm lens listed in your sig and the 135 adaptall as well. So my recommendation isn't glass or pixels but justfresh air - go get a reverse adapter for the 28 and also a coupling ring to put that 28 in front of the 135 and you can go have a ball of fun with up to 8:1 magnification (using your 2x converter as well) and all for about a fiver

I'd also get some simple extension tubes and use them with the 135 for moderate macro stuff which should work fine up to the point where the reversed 28 becomes a better solution. No need for anything expensive ...

Another great idea thanks Rob ... all my best efforts to spend some serious cash have been consistently thwarted right here. Pentax Users are a seriously thrifty and inventive bunch it seems!
