It is a very underestimated lens Maria, I had that version but swapped for the newer HD WR version and can really recommend it. Before I bought the first one I had a Sigma 70-300 and the Pentax is smaller and lighter.
Either way whichever variant you go for I am sure you won't be disappointed
Just noticed this bargain: link and link

Fantastic lens. I originally bought the sigma; had it for 2 days and returned it back, after having tried the Pentax. It is so much sharper. You will not regret spending the money.

I'd agree that it is an excellent lens, as Andrew says often under-rated, but depending on your budget you might want to consider the DA* 60-250 f4. In terms of quality it's hard to beat, the constant f4 aperture is totally usable at it's maximum (many lenses almost have to be stopped down to produce an acceptable result), it's WR (very useful on some occasions), and paired with the DA-WR 1.4 AF Converter it extends the range with minimal quality loss. Clearly the downside is the price, but IMHO it's really worth it - I hardly use any other long zoom since getting mine

Did a similar thing at the (now defunct) SRS branch at Ruislip many years ago (around 2009) - the Pentax was both much sharper at the long end and noticeably lighter than the Sigma, and I bought and still have it, albeit that I don't use it that much now I have some bigger, possibly better but much heavier, Sigmas. However it is still there when I think I need something light and sharp to carry on days out.
K-3 II, K-3 and a K-70 from SRS (having now relegated the K-30 /"K-50" to a backup body), & some Sigma and Pentax lenses (and a lot of old 35mm gear!)

For the money the 55-300mm can't be beaten, the DA is great but the HD WR is ever so slightly better and the the weather resistance is definitely a bonus. I do agree the 60-250mm f4 (and TC) are a step above and it is my most used lens but at 3 times the price it's hard to justify the extra cash at times.

Glad to hear you are on the mend. Back to topic - I've just done exactly what you are contemplating. The 55-300 has firmly replaced the Sigma, which went on Ebay just this evening - just don't let the punters hear about this posting or I won't sell it. If you're stuck for a macro just enter macro takumar in the ebay search box ..............

Thank you David, a Sigma went for £62 the other day and another for £50 something, all helps towards another lens

One of my absolute favourite lenses, my DA L 55-300, bought when I got back into photography about 5 years ago when I had my first Pentax DSLR, has provided sterling service and is still going strong despite being 'only' the basic plastic mount version. I've taken what I consider to be some of my best shots with this lens and it is one I will never part with unless it breaks
You will not regret buying one Maria.

David
