Hi,
I found a Pentax SMC 17-70 mm f/4.0 going really cheap on ebay.de, but there is a crumb inside the lens...

The seller doesn´t know how it got in and says it only affects images if there is a backlight/sun behind which I guess is a lot of the time.
Question is, can it be got out easily?
is it possible to fix it at home?

ends friday 20th at 4pm so answers quickly please....
Cheers,

Bruce

I wouldn't have thought that it would make any difference (if the crumb is that white thing at about 10 o'clock on the back of the front element). If you are worried about flare you could always mark the lens front with a black felt tip marker over the crumb. I'd keep an eye out for fungus though, which usually starts from organic matter bits such as this. Just make sure that the lens is dry when stored away. Go for it.

I'd be more concerned that the crumb ends up in the mechanism.

Mmmmmm after reading some more into this lens have decided against it.
Seems to be a lot of issues with sdm .
Also can't see how the piece of cake won't appear in every picture...
Then the problem with crumbs binding and fungal growth...
Will look for something else...probably the 16-45 which has much better reviews and is way cheaper.
Cheers,

Bruce

Never had SDM problems with my 17-70, but I would be reluctant to buy one with a crumb, or whatever in it, unless it was ridiculously cheap.

A very under rated lens. Actually useable at f4 even at the wide end. But be careful using the supplied hood - if you plonk it down mounted on a camera, extended and with the hood on, sooner or later you'll end up with a wobbly decentered lens. Amazon have them at a good price at the moment.

How did such a big crumb get in the lens in the first place?

The backs of lenses often have huge gaps where crumbs could enter. I would guess changing lenses whilst eating a sandwich could do the job very nicely....

Suppose it could be worse - could be a little bug that got inside and having a walk about. Maybe that's the way to get rid of the crumb - send in a bug to eat it!

There was a Pentax lens that swallowed a crumb. I don't know why it swallowed a crumb, perhaps it's dumb.

I think you've left a bit out:-

Perhaps its time to put a cap on it before anything else gets inside!

It might be easy to take the front element out to get at the crumb. Usually there is a thin retaining ring with 2 or 3 notches it it that can be unscrewed.
