Nice idea, but scarily expensive! I can see it being useful to someone taking photos for travel guides, surveyors, etc though, if it's accurate enough.

Also consider the privacy implications before you go shooting with one of these and upload the images to the web. It isn't beyond the bounds of possibility for websites to look at the GPS data attached to your uploads and start tracking where you go.

The price is actually incredibly reasonable, when you consider it also functions as an astro-tracker... not that geo-tagging or atro photography are things I am personally interested in...

Yet another reason for me to get the K5, have been thinking about astrophotography for a while, £230 is a bargain for that function alone.

For this price you could get a very decent walkers GPS and note the postion and direction on a good old piece of paper. The system would then be compatible with any Pentax camera and burglar proof! In addtion you would never get lost

You wouldn't need the paper Dave. If the GPS can store track data, software is available to match the date and time between images and GPS tracks, then tag the image with the GPS data relating to that data and time.

I use a very old Garmin eTrex Vista, and it works fine, but it won't track stars .

I think I would mainly be put off by having an additional lump on the top of my camera.

Lots of film bodies, a couple of digital ones, too many lenses (mainly older glass) and a Horseman LE 5x4.

Never been that interested in geotagging my pictures. It means I can't lie about where they were taken...
However th astro tracking feature using the sensor shift is a very interesting development. I'll wait for some user reviews before making my mind up.
Of course I'll need a K5 first....birthday treat in September

Well, I posted details of this on an astronomy forum (I joined up specifially to do so - how sad!) - and this is how the site moderator responded:

Quote:
Hopefully this is not wishful thinking but thanks so much for posting this information here, no doubt thousands of people will find that information and follow this thread with much anticipation! Also may disappoint many people that just recently purchased a DSLR if its true and does it well!

And later, when he had looked at the specs in detail:

Quote:
VERY VERY IMPRESSIVE! I think this will open up astrophotography to the masses - with a tripod anyone with a DSLR and this unit can photograph the sky. Too bad my Pentax does not have a magnetic SR system!

Never thought of myself as a mass before.
K5 is becoming more and more desirable, particularly as I`ve been researching astro mounts for the K20.

I think the proof will be in the pudding. If it really is the bees knees for astrophotography then I personally think that it is worth the money.

Geo tagging I'm not interested in

That'll fit in my underwater housing with the k5. Should prove useful for mapping dive sites, at the surface at least.
