Thanks for your help Steve. Your knowledge on the subject has put my mind at rest. The last thing I wanted to do is discover that I should have sent the camera back in Amazon's return period, not do so and then end up stuck with it. It seems that it's on spec then.
I have tested it this afternoon against the K3ii and it's definitely better. I always thought the K3ii was a bit noisy - maybe I am too fussy.

I do alot of low and bad light conditions, and night shooting... and I have found out through experience that iso settings can enduce noise if your exposure is not slightly over exposed. Under exposing in low light in my experience is a remedy for inducing noise.

Is the one of the plane shot late afternoon. near dusk or at dusk??? If so ignore the camera metering in these conditions. Dusk or near dusk is also an absolute bugger to shoot in. Which is a shame because you can get some epic results!

Most cameras have a sweet spot iso range in bad light conditions. I have found out the only way to find it, is play with the camera. Unfortunately it may involve using a monopod or tripod.

When playing with high iso settings, the thing I'd recommend is go out and play with the camera. Learns its little quirks and find its niche.

If you think you can just set a high iso then and get perfect images, unless you are paying thousands for top of heap Canon or Nikon. It's not gonna happen.

Sometimes tho.... noise can add to an image... especially in really weird weather conditions!

This was taken at almost 10 p.m. on a June evening in 2022.
Twas almost dark!
12,800 ISO and noise cleaned up with Dx0 PureRaw2
Can't complain at the grain and noise.

The plane shot was getting dark but it was still light if that makes sense! Handheld at 450mm I always use 500 as the shutter speed. Normally I have the lens on F5.6 and then let the camera set the ISO. Wrongly use F8 so the ISO consequently was higher than needed.

Thought as much.... the way the light is hitting it suggested it was.

Did you over expose it or go with what the cameras exposure said?

You flatter me - I'm blushing ! There are far more knowledgeable people than me on this forum (and far better photographers), I'm just the bloke who had a few minutes to spare and saw an interesting question.

Next time try fully manual. Shoot and check... best way to work in low light conditions, I only ever shoot manual in low light level conditions as the camera nearly always gets it wrong!

I am find this camera far better at exposure than the K3ii. I don't know whether my K3ii is faulty but I have never had a Pentax that takes so much work to expose correctly even in normal conditions. It definitely is far worse than the K5.
The other day I walked around the estate taking photos trying out my new camera and all the exposures were bang on. That would have never happened with the mk2.
