Hope the tc allows the SR to work at the corrected focal length.
That shouldn't be too hard to do. We can already do this today with any TC and any old manual lens so, even without any actual improvements, all we would need would be a firmware change to also allow manual f/l choice with AF lenses as well.

Indeed we do John and I think people often forget this. A small bird is constantly moving its head even if it appears still. Another reason why we tend to use burst mode. Back to the notion of a heavy f2,8 300mm - provided the f4 focuses well with a TC isn't F4 the new F2.8 with the current improvements in noise levels of at least one stop ISO equivalent esp. for birds? (Disregarding DOF which could be too narrow a lot of the time at F2.8
I guess so, but not entirely the same though. F2.8 lets you put on *both* a 1.4x and 1.7af converter and still get AF

What is the longest lens you can use with a TC and SR (i.e. not on a tripod)? I've used a 300 with a TC handheld and got some reasonable results (I would normally use a tripod with this combination), but I would have thought it gets less and less good the longer you go

Frequently use 300mm with a x2 and occasionally up to 600mm with the TC too. With something to lean back against on on it is OK in good S African light.
This was taken using a 400-600 with x2. Handheld and SR manually set to 800.

Unless dramatic improvements have taken place with Pentax SR since the K-7 it wasn't really suitable for long lenses and was optimised for use at 1/25th sec. so don't expect miracles

That's something I hadn't heard Algi, do you have a link to where optimisation of the SR is dicussed/published?

Falk Lumo did some extensive testing ..... Pentaxforums
Most of the SR tagged threads.....

I'm quite sure the K-3 will be better not sure about the K-5?
I normally use 1/320th with a 300mm + 1.7x on a K-5 and very
rarely have shake problems.

Canon 400mm f/5.6 is rated as one of the best lenses for for wild life, at a reasonable price, and has no IS.

Interesting post on DPR from someone who seems to know a bit about Pentax.
Be sure, all the electronic stuff is inside the converter.
Every ID is transmitted between camera and lens.
And the nice point should be,the release date means new firmware.
The current Pentax bodys are without any converter ID and logic.
New firmware should bring the autofocus back to most converters

"So now we are speculating on the rumoured performance of a rumoured teleconverter?"
I'm hoping it plays well with my DA*300 obviating the need for the also vapour ware 135-380, at least we have a picture of a convertor...
