I did this yonks ago on tke K7 - Come Into Our Room
I have only done some showreel stuff on the K30, way too cringey to share; but on this one you can see the shake reduction of the K30 being tested by me walking with the camera hand held, and also the loud screwdrive AF at one point (0:47): Out-take

I'd like to get a formal reply from Pentax on whether the K-30 actually uses the mechanical image stabilisation during video. There are reports it's actually digital...
I'm a bit irked that when you search for Pentax on say Vimeo, you get lots of other modern camera bodies utilizing the likes of the older manual focus Pentax-A 50mm lens...

Although the Pentax K-30's incorporates a sensor shift-type image stabilization system, this is disabled during video recording, in favor of what Pentax calls 'Movie SR'; in essence, digital image stabilization. Unlike a mechanical system, this allows completely silent operation, but there's no such thing as a free lunch. The system works by creating the video feed from a 'window' of pixels in one particular location on the sensor, with the location of the window moved around the sensor as needed to correct for motion. For this system to function, you need to leave a band of "spare" pixels around the periphery of the sensor, and in the process, the K-30 effectively increases the effective focal length crop significantly. While for telephoto videos this may in fact be desirable, it means that if you want the widest possible field of view, you'll want to disable image stabilization.
Likely due to the manner in which it operates, the K-30's Movie SR sometimes induced a slight "wobbling" in captured videos, visible as a slight squashing / stretching along the vertical axis. This is distinct from the "jello" effect caused by rolling shutter, although the two effects can be present in a single clip, making the distortion even more pronounced. We also noted that as you reach the limits of the corrective area available by panning the sensor window, the K-30 shows "hiccups" in video playback where your subject moves significantly further than it should in a single frame. On the plus side, the system is very stable, able to correct reasonably well even for motion from walking.
Note that even if you disable Movie SR, you don't recoup the wide-angle capabilities. The crop is increased at all times when in movie mode.

I specifically chose Pentax because of video. I was a confirmed Olympus user but wanted a rugged DSLR that would give me 1080 video capability as well as stills. I travel a lot and didn't want carry two cameras.
Olympus only had one offering, the E5, and the K5ii was lighter, nicer and higher spec'd. So I sold all my Oly kit and jumped ship.
I must confess that I didn't do that much research into the video functions and I am a bit disappointed that the AF doesn't work during video capture. Focus peaking would be useful as well. However I am very happy with my choice.
I have posted this before (apologies but its the only fully finished video I have where I used the Pentax as yet) but on a recent road trip to the Arctic Circle I used a combination of Iphone, GoPro, Kodak Playsport and the K5iis to capture the entire journey, using the most suitable/convenient at the time.
This is a sample:
Journey to the Midnight Sun
The Pentax was used for many of the static (non driving) and panning shots in the towns, waterfalls and of the midnight sun.
Our next journey will be to Iceland and later the Algerian Sahara where the weather/dust sealing will come into its own.
It was always my intention to by the K5iis as my backup camera and add a newer one later. Now that the K3 has been released it would seem that AF does now work on video (I think I read that somewhere) and that Pentax have made the whole video function more accessible and practicable. I cant wait to get one next year. (I just wish I could afford to go for the nice Ltd edition silver one now

Yeah you can always opt to turn off video stabilisation completely. In all cases though, the K-30 still crops the image down so it's pretty rude really. Given it's a mono inbuilt microphone I'm not often using that for sound capture so I could live with a noisy mechanical stabilsation noise and mechanical/real stabilisation during video.
This is what is frustrating me really. Pentax have all the components to make video pretty good on these units, and they're just not bringing them together to make it a whole. I know Pentax are good with stills, getting much better results from sensors than the competition and making solid bodies. I'd like to see them bring that to video also.

That 'Movie SR' sounds a bit like computer software type stabilising functions. I use Sony Vegas Platinum and tried the stabiliser function, but wasn't happy with it due to the significant crop it applies - you have no control over this or the amount of stabilising (although I guess you might in the 'Pro' version)?
The sensor shake reduction on the K7 during video is brilliantly effective I find - with the 14mm Samyang the effect is like floating on air. I have not been aware of sensor noise being recorded, although I often use a hotshoe mic. The K30 system sounds like a backwards step.
I know this was raised before - do we know yet if the K3 is this digital type SR (like k30) or the sensor shift kind like th K7 / K5 series?

I've not heard enough at all on the K3 video.
Is it sensor based (ie real) stabilisation.
Are the bit rates good/comparable with the competition out of the box at least?
Can the AF work during video recording?
Can you turn on focus peaking during video?
Yes, premiere pro has a warp stabiliser function and I expect it is much better than what a camera manufacturer can implement digitally on the fly. A bit like the HDR concept, in that if you want the best possible results you will do it in post production, and not in camera on the fly. It takes an age to calculate in premiere pro, so that degree of image manipulation simply can not be done on the fly in real time in the camera.
So yes, the K-30 approach is very backwards to me and I was hoping a firmware update would fix this, but these aren't coming for the older models to address these sorts of issues, it's mainly bug fixes of existing functionality.

There is an occasional 'chirk' as the SR moves the sensor. Nothing objectionable. I agree, the K30 system isn't as good, as far as movie SR is concerned. (It's better in all other respects though!)

You can keep on trying to break my love affair with the K7, but it will be in vain ... where matters of the heart are concerned.......
You won't even get me to buy a K3 - I mean, it doesn't even have a lever to switch between Af.S and AF.C ... practically unusable! And lets not start on with all that IQ and noise performance stuff, really, what does all that matter ....

Richard, that is impressive stuff, I thought I was about to watch the next Avatar or Lord of the Rings there! The pan motion is very good - its not handheld is it surely? And the cuts are great, excellent timing. The K30 video is serving you very well there (and the music was loud enough to drown out all the SR noise :wink
I've just started to do some J & L cut stuff myself - nothing as dramatic as you there (for now its cuts between kids feeding animals and the animals and pans around a farm yard!) - but it makes a big difference, has a professional impact straight away.
One point, I hope you don't mind, but to me the very charged music track is a little out of character with what are really very peaceful looking scenes, they don't go together as well as they could I feel.
But wow, great work, you are trailblazing Pentax video here!

I use a KR for video and am looking forward to getting a k3, wish the new 645z was in the budget..
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Yeah agree, was a bit pushed for time and was making this as a laugh for my brother as movie trailer style. The content could easily be reworked into a pretty nice and calm advert for NZ, rather than an aggressive action epic type trailer.

Thought I'd start a thread on using a Pentax for video. This has been done before by others, but I'm keen to keep seeing what people are up to.
I've enjoyed using my K-30 for video, but there are some obvious "Why did they do that?" decisions along with it. The likes of why can't I have focus peaking during recording, because that would really help!
I've made a few little clips but many feature children/family, so I'm not posting those publicly, but here's one I did of some birds for instance: Posted on Youtube - Select 1080 Resolution
Hopefully you like this and maybe it stirs some ideas too?
What have you been up to?
What thoughts on Pentax and Video do you have?
