Your interests, like my interests, are not the focal point of the universe. Disengaging the ego, it is obvious that an DA12-24 with extended range, improved optics, motor focus and weather sealing is an insanely attractive proposition. Four significant improvements in one lens and still people complain!

I have a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 and I'd love a Sigma 85mm f/1.4.

but really that lens is not even in the same range as this plan for a 12-35 so what's the point of comparing?

Personally I think a 12-35 is a good range. Another lens I am after eventually is the DA* 16-50. I wish this new 12-35 was a DA*

I agree, but bearing in mind my last post there's a lot of overlapping focal lengths here. What about the Pentax smc DA 12-24 mm f4.0 ED AL(IF) Lens? I guess it's the replacement for it.

Until we see the lens in production and see the price etc. we won't know if it is the replacement for another lens or not. My guess is "yes".

Interesting point about the shake reduction at longer focal lengths Don; I find the Sigma 18-250 works far better on the K7 using the OIS than with the cameras SR at its longer end. Plus you get the bonus of seeing a stabilised image in the viewfinder which makes it easier to see what you are doing and what sort of picture you are likely to get. And that's only at 250mm!

People banging on about Pentax not offering an affordable tele lens longer than the DA*300 should remember the following:

Tokina do only the ATX-D 80-400 in Canon and Nikon mount
Nikon don't make an affordable 400 or 500 prime, they are fast and expensive. You can get the AF-D 80-400 for about 1200 but I was advised to buy an AF-S 70-200 with a TCE-20II
Remember when you could get a prime Sigma 300 or 400 for about 400...

One Day I will buy the DA*300 (and the AF-S 300 f4 Nikkor)...I will join those clamouring for something a bit longer....

Aren't some of the Nikon long lenses very old designs.

Mifsuds have had a NEW Pentax DA*300mm f4 on a ebay for a few
weeks now for only 750..... with that sort of interest Pentax may
as well discontinue that as well

Pentax K-1 + K-5 and some other stuff

I'd prefer a longer zoom as I said. A long prime is too limiting for what I want.

You can get such a lens in M42 for less than 100 quid. Or search eBay for a SMC A 400/5.6 for under 700.

Sure there are lots of MF offerings, but AF?

Fixed F11, not very interesting, so not much excitement about having it available, so no, not much ppl will want to buy it.

If you want a long fast in-production lens then buy one from a third party. Or buy into another system to get one. Be sure to budget four or five figures.

Are we off topic enough?
