Pentax 18-55 WR Lens Hood

This may sound like a dumb question but I'm stumped by the removable panel on the bottom part of the lens hood. I would tend to leave the panel in place but what purpose is there in removing it??

Bet there's an obvious reason but I'm blowed if I can think of one!!

I think its so you can turn the polarizing filter , if you are using one.

Exactly, most modern Pentax hoods have this feature.
Another example of Pentax being designed for photographers.

Just remember where you put it should you remove it. I've lost one of mine .
