OS/SR on a Monopod?

Hi All

Just bought a Sigma 150-500mm to get some shots at various events, I have a 3 legged Monopod (Manfrotto 562-B) which I feel is the best way to support the lens. I'm just wondering if I should use Image Stabilisation. If so, I have three options:

1. In Camera SR (K3ii) Lens OS off
2. In Lens OS (full) turn off in camera SR
3. In Lens OS (panning) turn off in camera SR

Which one would be best to use?

Lens OS with SR turned off. As you'd expect use the panning option for panning. Full on option for static shots.

I have this lens and do what Alan said above, when using a monopod.

What's the slowest shutter speed you use at 500mm??

Ive had decent results hand held @500mm even at 1/80, but i try to keep above 1/250. I just wing it tbh, depending on what im shooting....it varies.
Google "sigma 150 - 500 pentax", and have a look on the "pentaxforum" result, theres a good selection of images on there which will give you a good idea what the lens can do.

When it comes to using SR, don't forget that the camera might be still but SR does nothing to stop subject movement. So to still flapping wings and the like, we still need high shutter speeds.
Best regards, John

Always use the Sigma OS even on a tripod. Holding a 500mm lens steady requires at least a brick wall

Due to the weight of this type of lens a shoulder support helps support the weight and steady the camera.

I use a Novoflex BasicBall blue with a cheap 75mm high B&S that is strong enough to let me also use it with the Sigma 150-500mm as a conventional tripod. As a chest/shoulder support I rest two legs on my shoulders and the 3rd on my chest. Sometimes I unscrew the leg that I rest on my chest and use just the two on the shoulders.

Very strong holds 25 kg = 55 lbs

You could also use it with a monopod and rest the two small legs against your chest.

Extension legs also available.

Costs about £61 off ebay

Forgot to add, the fox was handheld. I rattled off 6 shots. One was sharp.
