Still trying to perfect my technique for night time steam photos. This was take at Alresofrd station, 850 Lord Nelson was waiting to depart light engine. K3 and Sigma 18-35mm f1.8, Handheld 1/10th second, f1.8, ISO 6400. Lighting - station gas lights plus a portable 30w LED flood with 1/2 CTO gel

Nicely composed, and I like the illuminated steam defining the top of the loco. It looks as if the lighting was really tricky and is flaring a bit - could the highlights be toned down in processing? Also, being hand-held at that speed means there is lack of sharpness; I would have thought a tripod would be essential for any night-time shot but is there a restriction on using one here?

Very dramatic although the colours are understandably a bit odd. I'd have chucked in the towel and converted it to B/W...
Best wishes,

Andrew

I like it. Handheld at 10sec is very praiseworthy. What the picture lacks in critical sharpness it makes up for in atmosphere.

I just enjoyed the larger Flickr version (shame we can't have that size on this forum directly). Excellent and very atmospheric. Well done.

A great steamy nightime scene! Your LED lighting seems to have done the trick .... I'm guessing the CTO warms it up, which has given a tungsten tinge. Is that battery operated?

Sorry, been a bit slow to reply, but yes these are battery operated lamps, the CTO is to warm it up.....Alresford has a mix of tungsten and gas lighting, Ropley the same with a bit of Mercury arc thrown in.....

Some more mixed lighting at Ropley, but I deliberately went for a colder colour balance on this one...

Fantastic loco collection there! Personally, I would be very pleased with any of those images
Both the *istDS and the K5 are incurably addicted to old glass

It's a nice mix of tones and the night adds it's sense of mystery.
