I've just updated both my K-5 and my K-X.
That's the first time I've done it and it's dead easy, so I say "why not?"

All my pics are on an external Hard drive . I may, and do, delete versions, but the RAW files are not deleted.

I have just downloaded and installed the V1.14 firmware on my K-5 (absolutely painless process) and I would tend to support the views that Steve Coe published on this thread. My K-5 (mk1) is now locking accurately and quickly onto subjects in very dim light indeed in my living room with the 55-300 lens. This lens is not renowned for its ability to lock onto focus and although my tests are in no way scientific, I don't think it would have focussed in this light prior to the upgrade.
I suspect that Pentax have included some of the focus improvements found in the K-5 Mk11 into this firmware without advertising the fact. Why would they? If your mk1 can be improved by simply downloading and installing a file, why would you buy a newer model?

Hi all,
I've too had a play around in poor low contrast light this evening and there certainly seems to be an improvement on the K5's AF lock at 300mm.
Like others I can not prove this but it is Logical in a way if the camera is to cope with the long 560mm. Not that I can afford one of those!

Just a thought, check you haven't inadvertently switched to spot-metering.

Well my new K-5II arrived this morning already (thanks Chris) and after setting it up I loaded in the new firmware ... went through all 3 phases, switched it off and then back on ... nothing, zilch, nada, dead.
switched it off and then back on again ... all is fine.
Phew.
My 560mm f5.6 is certainly locking on a lot faster with the new firmware now

As you probably read mine did that when I put the card in to update the firmware. Definitely not good for the nerves.

The SD card door wasn't open when you switched it on again Mike? Mine (K5) was when I switched it back on again and for a few seconds I thought I'd bricked it (even though the update went according to plan) before realising.
Like others I'm thinking AF is a little bit better but not sure if its because someone else has told me to think it

I've never thought twice about updating my camera software...until reading this thread.
I genuinely never have seen an issue - just followed the instructions. Am I missing something? Lead a charmed life?

Updated my K30 this morning. Will see how the DA 55-300 copes in low light this evening. That should be indicative.

K-5 IIs arrived from SRS this morning - checked it was working and had it upgraded in minutes
