A new firmware is coming up for the K-3 III with ssome interesting features. Apparently, it will allow the use of different focus sensors depending wether the camera is held verticallly or horizontally. It willl also have a 1.7 X crop that will also show up in the viewfinder. The IBIS will also be upgraded to make it easier to stabilise the sewnsor in pan mode when subjects are moving diagonally (not the "Diagon Alley" from some movies:shock. And the few regular tid bits like improved stability...

I saw the announcement earlier, and some questions struck me.

Who pans diagonally??

How will a crop mode be visible in the viewfinder of an SLR unless they're activating hardware that's been there since the beginning?

As for the focus sensors, I think it's overall an improvement and can be useful. My Lumix S5 does that and it was initially very frustrating because I didn't expect it, but it's actually useful.

Presumably any kind of frame, crop or otherwise is capable of being displayed in the viewfinder if the software tells the camera which parts of the focus screen to black out. Or have I misunderstood how this works ?

For both the 1.3 and 1.7 crop modes, a relevant frame is shown in the viewfinder.
Just one thing- the crop only is relevant to jpg images, not RAW. I got caught out on this!
Lots of gear - but not a lot of idea!
