Museum of Islamic Art, Doha

I finally got the opportunity to give my new K3 a good try-out the other day, visiting the Museum of Islamic Art in Doha. The building was designed by IM Pei, who was coaxed out of retirement at the age of 91 to design it. After a 6 month trip visiting various heritage sights in many Muslim countries, he designed this building, which is quite extraordinary. In fact, it's the only building in Doha I really like.

The first shot is taken with my Ricoh GR, to give an impression of the exterior.

The rest of the images are taken with the K3 and Sigma 8-16mm, with lens corrections in Lightroom after correcting the exif with PTGui (thanks for the heads-up, Karel!. I'm really liking the K3.

Just inside the entrance

From the 2nd floor; the galleries are all behind the stairways at the right and left hand sides.

Ceiling

View with a room (had to remove a lot of moire on this one).

Outside, looking toward West Bay

Love them all Jon, great graphic shapes and crystal clarity. The last one is special, you've clearly had to take firm control over the contrast there - perhaps I'd tone down the brightness over the far horizon a touch?

The mixed lighting of the interiors is beautifully reproduced.

The brightness on the horizon has been toned down loads already; it was one of the few days we get in Doha with a blue sky rather than a beige one.

I've been experimenting for a while with exposing to the left, or even deliberately under-exposing, shots that have a huge dynamic range, contrary to the usual advice of exposing to the right. All of these were under-exposed by 1-2 stops (with the exception of the GR shot). It's easier to pull back detail from shadows than highlights, and Lightroom or even more so Optics Pro have such good noise-reduction nowadays that it's a viable alternative to bracketing in many cases. A "normal" exposure would have completely blown-out the windows.

Thanks, guys! The building is pretty amazing, I love going there. They have some great exhibitions there, too, though Damien Hirst was pushing it a bit for me, he had an exhibition there (in a separate building) last year. Total crap imo.

My wife currently has one of her paintings exhibited at the museum (the second one they have have shown there). She only took up painting a year ago, so we're pretty chuffed with her progress!
