Hello all. The natural history museum in La Rochelle was my first post-lockdown museum visit this summer. As they generally do, the museum offered a plentiful supply of shapes, lights, and shadows - photographic inspiration galore.

I can appreciate the processing treatment as a natural enhancement of the glass and reflections, and of course removing the variables of colour casts and hotspots. I like the bolder contrast in nos 1 & 10.

As to the compositions..... I think No 2 is better with the tails cut off, not the heads like in 6, 7 & 8....we've not supposed to cut off heads in photos, I think thats right... (do the shadows count? , I'm not sure...)

Another beautifully presented set Serge - your monochrome treatment is superb as usual but it is your eye for different compositions that give you your trademark (IMO), you often break the "rules" but instead of looking wrong they make the viewer work to understand what is going on, particularly with your use of shadows.

For me #1 and #5 are the stand out images in an excellent set.

" A Hangover is something that occupies the Head you neglected to use the night before".

K1 - Sigma 85mm F1.4, Pentax 150 -450 F4.5 / 5.6, Pentax FA 24 - 70 F2.8

I love these and the fact that you "broke" the rules, clearly deliberately, I like. I find the half-hearted breaking of rules is what does not work (e.g., slightly converging verticals; either get them straight or make them dramatic!). I especially like No 1 with its great use of shadow. 3, 4, 5 and 10 are really great too. Less keen on 11 and 12 (11 seems to busy to me compared to the others).

Nevertheless, a nice set of images.

Really interesting. I have come back to look at these photos several times and found more to spark my imagination. Monochrome works and the contrast balance is great. Number 5 is the stand out shot for me. Thanks, Peter

Thank you all for your thoughts and comments, they are much appreciated. 'Breaking the rules' ... I suppose I do, in a way, but that is not how I understand it. I feel, rather, that I am often guided into a photographic session's own set of rules - and am quite happy to abide, as they help me see beyond, below, through, aside and, at the best of times, askance. Which are all my favoured means of looking at the world that surrounds us (and trying to make some sense of it). So yes, your comments are all spot on.

I wonder if you need that bottom bit that looks like a doorway or if you could bring the shadows in to fill it in?

Master! Well now, let's not get carried away Gareth! Funny thing about cleanliness, I'm in the habit of often underexposing more than necessary, as I feel there's always a slight gritiness that appears (to my satisfaction) as I pull the shadows up in post-processing. Maybe my imagination at work? Regarding the doorway, I actually wonder if I should maybe lighten it up a bit to make that escape route more visible.
