M42 mount to Pentax K adapter advice please

Posted 05/09/2024 - 09:58 Link
Davids lovely images here https://www.pentaxuser.com/forum/topic/end-of-summer-with-a-vintage-takumar-1-8-... have inspired me to buy an adapter and use my M42 55mm f1,8 Takumar lens on my K-3ii. However, a search on the 'net reveals a surprising number of 'options' at an equally surprising range of prices and a startling amount of 'beware of this ...' type warnings!

As I'm still relatively new to the Pentax digital world, I would be grateful for any informed advice any member has to offer on the purchase of an appropriate adapter.

I recommend you push the boat out and get an genuine Pentax adapter (approx £20+) for two reasons, firstly the ones that don't sit in-mount (lip that covers the contacts) don't allow lenses to reach infinity. Secondly the cheap ones that do sit in-mount don't always ensure that the lens aligns to the top, so as you screw it in the aperture mark isn't always at the top which is annoying.

Here's an example of a genuine Pentax adapter with a M42 Tessar.

Have to agree with Rick and Chris - the Pentax genuine versions are the best.

That's the right one ! There is a knack to getting it in and a knack to getting it out - which is helped if you possess an intact and un bitten right thumbnail! (Biters have to improvise with some sort of metal tool).

Getting it in is much easier if we attach the adapter to a lens and then just bayonet the whole into the camera like any K lens. To remove, unscrew the lens. Releasing the catch and letting the adapter fall out into the palm of the hand covers removal.

What we are in effect doing is temporarily converting a K bayonet camera into a screw thread one and screw thread lenses can be removed and fitted as desired.

Incidentally, the case for the Pentax adapter is a strong one. It may cost more, but it doesn't leave fragments of plating floating about like some cheaper ones do.

Hope that helps!
Best regards, John

I use the removal tool I got with a cheap adaptor works great.

Another vote here for using the genuine ones. The first time I tried a third-party one, in a camera shop, it got stuck on my K200D and their technician had to remove it. That kept me away from M42 lenses for a couple of years before I got a genuine one which worked without problems. I have several now, all bought used, and I don't think any cost me more than 20 quid.

The nail on the left forefinger un-clips it to remove it from the camera, holding the camera in the right hand.
