WEX have a used Pentax D-FA*50mm f1.4 in almost mint condition for £612 at present:

https://www.wexphotovideo.com/pentax-50mm-f1-4-fa-sdm-aw-lens-used-1734168/

It lists at £679 but you can apply code USUMC10 and get a further 10% off.

That's a superb price (Yes, I know it's still expensive) for one of the best lenses I've ever used!

If you don't want to buy it for the optical quality, you can use it as a footstool or fancy paperweight

Perhaps an Olympus convert bought it!

It had been up for weeks now at around £700 - huge price drop making it a real bargain.

I have got one but TBH find the weight of it excessive for a 50mm prime so been considering moving it on.

It might be the tipping point for amateurs like me - at what point do we stop lusting for the best stuff and simply stick with what works for us?

We can make great images with whatever we have, be it the humble Pentax M 50mm f1.7 or the D-FA* 50mm f1.4, it's far more to do with the skills of the image maker than the tool. But that fact will never stop "Lens Lust", "L.B.A." or "G.A.S."

I follow a couple of photographers on Flickr who keep to one genre and just use two lenses, 50mm and 85mm, almost always at apertures around f1.8 frequently in challenging lighting. In that situation the large and expensive *lenses would be justified. Ditto for pros doing portraits etc., but for those of us who are less specific then the balance is likely tipped to light weight and compactness. Whilst I may not buy them I am glad that they are there.
