Looks like i got me some debugging to do!

Do you have to do this for each lens? Just wondered if it remembered settings for each lens like the K20 does?

I was worried that if I missed the thick focus line (which the red lines indicate I did) then the camera would try and find something else.
I haven't had a chance to walk around testing normally, but now I am actually looking forward to it instead of dreading coming home and plugging the card in.

I am just about to find out if the other lenses are affected, I'm fairly sure it's one setting for all on the K10D. That's why I am considering leaving it in debug mode.
Anyone know if this is a bad idea?

before and after... actually this first one looks just plain out of focus, bad example possibly, but you'll have to believe me when I say that the images just got better and better until I stopped and did the test chart. (I was focussing on the silver ring, the red line indicates the geometric centre)

Help!!! I'm terribly confused.

I was seriously considering updating my DL2 to a K10D, by buying one of the last ones from SRS. But now I'm having doubts as I don't want to do any adjustments to the camera.

So a question - Does this back/front focussing occur with all K10Ds? If so does it occur with the later models?

Thanks.

All the K10D's I have been awatre of personally through our own and other members of our camera club have been just fine.

We all use Pentax lenses (or the Samsung variants) and have had no problems whatsoever.

Personally I wouldn't expect to have to enter the engineering modes and would leave it to a repair house if it were ever needed.

I would buy with confidence.

No. The focusing is normally correctly adjusted in the factory.

Remember the silent majority - the users who don't need to post any messages about back/front focusing because they do not have the problem.

People have been talking about the back/front focusing before the K10D came out anyway. I expect it's just as likely with a DL2 as it is with a K10D.

I'm sure this is right, and as IceBlinker says, most people (including me) have no problems.

Always worth checking it with the test chart though - and then you can be absolutely confident that it's the workings behind the viewfinder, not in front of it, that's at fault. The former is usually easier and cheaper to fix.

Ideally this would be the case. These days, though, it seems more and more common that repair organisations are careless and lazy, preferring to fob off customers until they go away, rather than taking the matter seriously and investigating properly.

It's common enough for a camera to come back in a worse state than it went off in, for me to vote for the DIY approach with this problem, and others when it doesn't need specialist skills.

Yeah, I'm in agreement on two points:

Somebody deserves a refund from a careless repair shop (I'm being generous calling them careless on a matter that stinks like FRAUD).

And as a crazy person that loves to take things apart and tinker with thier innards.... I'm a little disappointed that none of my Pentax d-slrs have given me an excuse to "OPERATE"!
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

I completely agree, I would recommend the K10D to the right kind of photographer but this thread started because I didn't trust the camera shop. my other thread on this matter concerned the fact that my lens came back from Pentax no better and apparently rattlier than before.

I have literally come back from an aborted photo session 10 mins ago because my 16-45 is most definately broken! The Pentax guys have definately stripped something. it is as wobbly as anything on wide angle and simply won't focus. So now my tests above have to be ignored and the body is back to default settings.
I think the reason it worked in the test is the camera was pointing down at 45 degrees so the front element was held out by gravity where it was able to engage with the drive. or it was on about 35mm where it can engage OK. As soon as I took it outside and pointed it up at a hot air baloon the element dropped back and dissengaged.

{Edit}
Pentax have agreed to replace the lens. Whoo hoo! maybe now I can find out why you all like it!
