Lens Hood for Pentax K-R DA-L lenses

Hi all. I just joined, and thought of posting this question. I couldn't find anything on this topic in the Forum section, and I hope I've also got the correct forum topic for this issue. I also hope this question is not redundant.

Question: I wonder if there's any difference in the lens hood for the DA-L vs DA lenses (18-55mm, and 50-200mm). Fyi, I recently bought the K-R and the lens kit that came along with the DSLR is the DA-L series. I've checked Amazon for the len hoods, and they are all for the DA series. So, I'm not sure if the same lens hoods can be used, as afterall both lenses are 52mm.

Thanks and regards.

The Pentax DA hoods will fit the DAL lenses but they are very expensive for what they are. I know that some people have bought cheaper copies on eBay and seem quite happy with them.

You can buy third party hoods for the 18-55 and 50-200 off ebay that fit perfectly and cost a fraction of the price of the actual Pentax ones.

Thanks for the quick replies, GARTMORE and BIGDADDYBUCKS. I've actually thought of getting the len hoods from eBay, but the vendor mentioned that the lens hood for DA may not fit the DA-L, which was why I posted this question, to double confirm. Yes, they are so much cheaper on eBay compared to getting them directly from Pentax or elsewhere. In fact, I've even bought the AA battery holder on eBay for a fraction of what Pentax is charging - no doubt the brand name 'Pentax' is not imprinted, but who cares, as long as it works, lol.

Thanks again guys.

What they said about 3rd party copies. Much cheaper and perfectly acceptable.

If you want to buy genuine then make sure you get the hoods for the DA lenses rather than the WR versions, they are not interchangeable (WR hoods will not fit earlier DA lenses of the same focal length, at least the 18-55mm is like this).

DANGERMOUSE - what does 'WR' stand for?

Btw, on eBay, it's stated that the len hoods are for the DA lenses (18-55, 50-200mm). But since u guys confirmed that the len hoods also work for the DA-L lenses (also 18-55, 50-200mm), I'll be making the purchases soon. I wonder why on eBay it doesn't spell out that those len hoods work for both DA and DA-L lenses. Would have made our lives easier.

Thanks again folks!

WR is Weather Resistant - these are the sealed lenses. They aren't waterproof (so don't take them diving) but are supposed to handle being rained on.

Thanks, DANGERMOUSE. So, that's what 'WR' mean. I learnt something today. )

Just a word of caution about Ebay fixed hoods - I bought one for my 18-55 but there is major vignetting between 18-25mm. It was listed as an 18-55mm hood but pretty much useless for wide angle. I have now bought a colapsable rubber hood (again from Ebay!) which is much more practical. Still vignettes at 18mm but at least I can fold it back without faffing around.

You can buy the Chinese made Lens Hoods for the DA L 18-55 and DA L 55-300mm with confidence from ebay (flower petal type for the 18-55mm and the normal hood for the 55-300). The quality is excellent and they fit perfectly with no vignetting. Best thing is they are less than £2 each.

I agree with David, Chinese ones are great and very cheap but be prepared to wait a while for delivery.

** LAYINGBACK/bigdaddybucks ** I'm OK with the waiting. I also don't mind the Chinese ones as long as the quality is OK, and that they last, instead of break after a week or two of use.

Thanks again EVERYONE for the advice.

Well the packing was to remove the panel from 50-200 one and slide 18-55 one part way inside - which does actually make for a fairly strong unit. But it was then in just a thin bubble bag, then squeezed into usual small bubble/paper "padded" envelope. They made in through air mail that way just fine.

Did need a little smoothing on the nodule that snaps it into place on 1 side of the 50-200 one. They are still a little hard to lock when reversed, but OK in use the right way round. (Figured better to be conservative as they can only wear down, and my original Samsung 50-200 one also doesn't lock very easily when reversed.)

Further to strength point: the 50-200 dropped off the lens when being retrieved from bag, about 3' to 4' drop on to tarmac pavement. It bounced, panel popped out, but no damage or even a mark that I could see. (I dropped a Pentax 18-55 lens cap in similar circumstance and it still has 2 very marked depressions.)

YMMV.

Yikes! Sorry to hear about the drop. LAYINGBACK. Luckily the lenses were not damaged. Else, it's gonna cost a bomb.

Thanks for the info. I'll be careful when putting on the lens hood.

Rgds.
