I have the normal hood for the 43/1.9 but wondered if there is one available like the more compact hood of the 40/2.8. the more enclosed hood with circular or rectangular opening would help more with flare.

The filter thread for the FA43 and DA40 are both 49mm so the DA hood may well fit?

I can test it for you in the next couple of days if you like? Or they may be someone on here who has quicker access to this combination

p.s. I've got a feeling I have a spare DA40 hood

Lenny, thank you. It would be helpful if you could do a quick test for vignetting. The alternative is to go full James Ravillious and start taping things up.

I'm not in a position to upload images at the moment but a couple of quick max aperture shots indicate no vignetting at all

No PP - there is a little vignetting - very fixable in PP

No problem - I do have a spare DA 40 hood, but no lens cap for it. I think you'll probably find a third party version for quite a good price (JJC?) - but if you want mine just send me a PM and I'm sure we can sort something out

An alternative could be a stop-down adapter for use with filters. I think someone here used one on an M 50mm lens and found it to greatly increase performance at wide apertures. My memory is foggy but it might have been a 49mm to 37mm stop-down used on an APS-C camera. An adapter with such a large difference is hard to find and you might need several in a stepped arrangement.

I went for the JJC version - thank you Lennybloke. Will see how it turns out. The step down adaptor is a good idea though
