You might have your own solution but if you have Faststone Image Viewer (often under-rated), load the image, hit Ctrl-E and use the relevant slider to reduce the red level by about -13. It takes away the slight red cast and leaves a perfectly black background. IMHO, the scene springs forth with a new clarity.
Whatever that crap, what a magnificent result you have achieved. Well worth freezing your bits off for!

Fabulous result!
Funnily enough Thor's Helmet features in today's APOD image. The images shows the Seagull Nebula and Thor's Nebula, this reveals that Thor's Nebula is surrounded by the red edges of the Seagull Nebula, so the red overall background tint is in fact believable. See link below to the APOD image:
