K5 vs K10D - a question about their respective designs

I happened to walk past Jessops the other day, so I went in, and for the first time, had a very brief play with a K5.

Now, I've used a K10D exclusively for more than four years, and I'd never handled a K7 or a K5 before.

So inevitably it was going to feel a little unfamiliar, but nonetheless I was slightly disappointed with the feel of the thing. The right hand grip didn't feel as comfortable as the K10D, and the pop-up flash seemed a little plasticky.

Now, I only had a very few minutes, so this is hardly an impression to base anything at all on.

However, I would be interested to hear from those that have made the transition from a K10/20 to a K7/5.

How have you found the ergonomics?

I thought exactly the same thing but after using the K-7 for a few weeks it felt so much better than the K10D/K20D. The larger hand grip means I can walk around with the camera and fairly large lens and not worry about a neck strap at all. It feels that safe.

So much so that when I went back to my K10D it felt exactly like you presently think of the K-7/K-5 .. in the end I sold it and am looking for a used K-7 as a second camera.

I prefer the K-5 to the K20D. I never got on with the K20D, too big, always felt uncomfortable to hold it was just wrong for me.
When I picked up a K-5 at Photokina it just fit. It felt right. The hand grip is more comfortable and as Mike says it is easy to carry without a strap.

Had the same reaction, going to a K-5 from a K20D (and K10D before that). It took a few days to get used to the new placement of the various buttons. But one DOES get used to it. (And I'm a septuagenarian and not supposed to find change easy.)

I am with you on this. Do I need to replace my K10 no, does what I need it to do. Does that stop me looking at new stuff? No. However, looked no further once I had handled a newer body. Do not like the grip at all.

My choice would be the new tech in an istD body. Value now = same as a door stop but I loved that body just suited me down to the ground.

Comparing the KR to my DS2 I must say the size and shape are remarkably similar. The kr is lighter and better in every way (save the viewfinder on the ds2 which is a bright all glass pentaprism). I looked at the k5 and weighed it against the k10's and decided the to keep the k10's and add a kr for low light and video work.
if I didn't have two k10's, I'd consider the k5 a worthy upgrade with weather sealing...
Fired many shots. Didn't kill anything.

Agreed totally with Gywn and Mike there.

It took me a while to get used to the position of the K-5's play/preview button being top left instead of bottom left, but I've got used it now.

The switch around between the Green and exposure compensation buttons placement is the one that still has me confused every now and again, but I do find the K-5 very comfortable, but best with the grip. Felt odd during the early days, but lovely now.

I looked again on Sunday, at a K5+18-55 in Jessops and did find it a little small, reminiscent of my Fuji bridge camera.

I don't think I have particularly big hands but they did seem to get in each others way holding the K5. This is after four years with a K10D, latterly with 16-45 instead of 18-55.

Just to put the cat amongst the pigeons I picked up a D7000 for a feel and that was more comfortable. The autofocus with an 18-105 seemed quicker and definitely quieter and the viewfinder was nice too.

Tell me it's just a phase and I'll grow out of it...

I have no issues with using Pentax and Nikon bodys side by side. The controls are close enough. On/off is the same and rear wheel EV comp is the same with front wheel for aperture.

I always shoot gripped bodies.

I bought my K10 and K7 without ever picking one up. I bought the D7000 without ever picking one up. I held the D700 body only for two mins before paying for it.

You will generally always adapt to a camera once you start using it. I've never had a problem with using the istD and K10D as well as the K10D and K7 side by side.

I also agree with Gwyn & Mike (& Smeggy). When I first handled a K7 in a shop, I wasn't that impressed compared to the K20D as far as comfort goes (could detect little difference build wise). However, I recently got a K5 and swiftly found that the handling is actually - despite it's diminutive size - definitely superior. The ergonomics are superb. As for performance, it's an even bigger step up, but that's another story...

I too played with a K5 (and a KR) in Jessops and am looking to upgrade after 4 years with a K10 which is now missing its SR switch, the K5 felt agreeable, the KR small, the deal maker seems to be the fact that the K5 does everything the KR and the K7 can do, though I'm not sure I'd buy one from Jessops.

Don't buy anything from jessops! Their 'after sales sevice' is non-existent.

Yes, especially if there are sensor 'stains' and all the exchange rigmarole, or has that been solved now?

I got my original K-5 exchanged for a replacement ( front focus fault ) on Monday ( yesterday ) by SRS. it took approximately 30 seconds. courier turned up with replacement. I gave him the original. I signed a bit of paper, said 'Cheers' and Bob's you Uncle.

Ok you might not have an uncle named Bob, but you get my drift

And no I wouldn't buy anything from Jessops. Ever!
