K5 vs. K5II Autofocus

True, but in my experience with the K-r, even with AF assist, focus is still woefully slow and often inaccurate.. hopefully this isn't the case with the K30

The reviews I have seen suggest that the K30 autofocus is better than the K5 but not as good as the K5ii. The availability of focus peaking, for my money, makes the K30 a very attractive option in low light, especially if used on a tripod.

I have recently had the k-5 k30 and the k-5 mkii each body has improved af on the previous version. The k30 is slightly better having focus peaking, but the k30 was limited in major ways for me compared to the k-5 plus i don't use focus peaking.

Limited in what way? My biggest niggle is just the AF to be honest, but obviously there is a steep price gap between the K30 and the K5II

Not being able to fit a grip, the small grip of the body, the lack of some buttons and the missing top LCD. Dont get me wrong the k30 is a cracking body for the price, but having already got a k-5 and the k-30 was to be a second body the k-5 mkii made more sense for me and has now become my primary body with my mki my backup body.

Hmm true.. I do like the concept of having more control at your fingertips, but then again I've never owned a DSLR with a top LCD, not sure how much I want/need one.. Although the extra £50 cashback (expiring soon? :/) is an additional incentive..

Whichever body you get the AF on both of them gives you a confidence previous pentax bodies have been lacking.

My K200D had a top LCD and I admit, I do miss it. Having said that, if I had to choose between a DSLR with a top LCD and one with focus peaking, I'd choose the latter - mainly because it makes accurate focussing with manual lenses a bit easier and more certain. If I didn't use manual focus lenses for more than 50% of the photos I take, I might make a different decision.

Can I just confirm then that the AF IS better on the K-5II and IIs over the K-5 for those who use both?
I only ask as I did some portrait shots with just a Beauty dish and no other lights, and the focus was hit and miss on my K-5 with the tungsten modelling light.

Having had more time with my Kiis, I have noticed the following 3 improvements over the K5
1)Faster and better low light focussing and under different/mixed lighting
2)Slightly less noisy (in my usable range)
3)Better exposure - where the K5 used to underexpose, the K5iis seems spot on
K5iis and a couple of lenses.

Yes it is, a lot better! All my shots have been focussed spot on so far under mixed conditions.

I think K5 is good enough to serve my purpose. I realise AF is not just from camera and lenses, but also your sense.

I just bit the bullet and went for the K-30, haven't had a chance for a proper play with it, but the AF thus far seems all good!
