K5-ii firmware update - worth it?

The OS of the external device that wrote the file to the card (and if it did it will support FAT 32 ) is irrelevant.

you are copying from the OS to the Card

so the OS is writing to the card's filesystem

But if it cannot work with the filesystem then it will be unable to write.

The first thing the installed does (or should do) is check the full checksums for the file to ensure the data being read is correct. An incorrect checksum should result in an installation being aborted.
